Heroes with Hearts of Steal Blog Tour with Kym Roberts (#Giveaway)

2251712522495645

Thank you so much for having me and my guys at Reading Between the Wines!

I’ve been touring a few sites, introducing readers to my heroes and today I am happy to share a peek at Alapai (Al-a-pie) Lincoln from my book Dead On Arrival, A Malia Fern Mystery.  I decided to take my guys to dinner at the Hotel Del Coronado, on Coronado Island off the coast of San Diego, CA. And if you’ve been following my blog continuity, then you’ve met Walt from my book Handled By Officer and Makaio, Pai’s cousin.

So you’d think this meeting would go smoothly right?  Wrong. Makaio and Walt are on the brink of throwing punches and Makaio and Pai haven’t spoken to each other in a year despite the fact that they’ve been best friends since they were in diapers.

So join the fun, while I torture my guys … and maybe myself ;) Then leave a comment at the end and enter to win one of my many giveaways!

----
I was the only one who saw Makaio’s pain — a twitch in his jaw, and the diminishing of light in his eyes. The warm cocoa depths burned into a dark chocolate so black I could see my reflection almost as if I was staring into cold polished black onyx.

“I’m sorry. I had to invite him, but maybe you guys could work—” I tried to explain, but Makaio wasn’t falling for it.

“I have no doubt, my cousin will want to make me do more than kiss the pavement, isn’t that right, cuz?” Makaio slowly turned around, but the smile had disappeared from Pai’s face long before their eyes met.

I stood up, cognizant of the fact that I was the smallest person standing at our secluded table by about hundred pounds.  Walt followed my lead. He didn’t know what was going on, but he knew the bad blood between these two men was much more dangerous than what had transpired between he and Makaio from the moment the met.

I’d say Pai’s gaze matched Makaio’s, but there was a difference, and not just in color. They both reflected pain and loss, but Pai’s beautiful blue eyes also held a hint of betrayal that cut him at the core.

I’d made a mistake bringing these two together. Neither one had advance notice that we’d be sitting down to eat dinner together at the Hotel Del Coronado on Coronado Island. I’d thought flying them to the mainland away from family, friends and home would help ease the tension between them and create a bridge to lead them over the chasm that separated them.

I was wrong.

“Yes, you made a huge mistake, baby girl.” Pai looked away from the man who injured him and gave me his undivided attention. “Obviously, your plan will not work, so I suggest we break up this unhappy reunion, or whatever it is, before it goes any further.”

“I’m sorry Pai, but I need to speak to all of you. Tonight.” I explained.

“Well, it will have to be without me. If you’ll excuse me.” Pai refused to listen.

“Pai you can’t leave.” I pleaded.

“I’m sorry baby girl, I beg to differ.” Pai turned to leave but Walt wasn’t going to let it happen, despite the fact that Pai had height and brawn on the large cop standing next to me.

“She flew me all the way here from Kansas City for this meeting, and the two of you got a free ticket from the Hawaiian Islands, I think you owe it to her to at least hear what she has to say.” Leave it to Walt to have a sense of propriety.  He was my by-the-book-go-to-guy in all things.  Luckily he didn’t know I was going to mess with that side of his personality very soon.  Otherwise, he’d probably walk out the door with Pai and they’d go have a beer in the hotel bar together.

“That’s not cool, baby girl.”

I blushed. At my age, I shouldn’t but I gave Pai a special ability, and he was using it right now to read my mind. “There’s a reason behind the madness.”

“Un-huh.”

Walt looked at Pai and then back at me, a look of total confusion wrinkling his brow, until Makaio filled him in. “Pai has the ability to read women’s thoughts, he’s been doing it with Kym since he walked in.”

My boy-scout had fear in his sky-blue eyes for the first time—ever. “So…so you know what she’s planning?”

Don’t tell him Pai. It’s for his own good. Trust me.

“I’ve seen some of it. The rest, she’s hiding.”

That was partially true, but I know Pai saw Kiley’s blond curls in Walt’s future. Everything else I was keeping closed in my mind behind three locked vault doors with the co… do?mbinations held behind another locked door.

I’ve had partner on the PD that knew exactly what I was thinking as we approached a crime scene or investigated a case. Have you ever been so in-tuned with someone you knew what they were going to say … or do? Do you believe it’s because of a special connection, or is it because s/he just thinks the same way you do? I’d love to hear your experiences and/or thoughts.

Kym Roberts Bio:
Three career paths resonated for Kym during her early childhood: a detective, an investigative reporter, and…a nun. Being a nun, however, dropped by the wayside when she became aware of boys—they were the spice of life she couldn’t deny.
In high school her path was forged when she took her first job at a dry cleaners and met every cop in town, especially the lone female police officer in patrol. From that point on there was no stopping Kym’s pursuit of a career in law enforcement—even if she had to duct tape rolls of coins to her waist to meet the weight requirements to be hired.
Kym followed her dream and became a detective that fulfilled her desire to be an investigative reporter, with one extra perk—a badge. Promoted to sergeant Kym spent the majority of her career in SVU. She retired from the job reluctantly when her husband drug her kicking and screaming to another state, but writing continued to call her name, at least in her head.
