Standing Up To an Alpha Male
PRIVATE AFFAIR begins when New York model, Olivia Winters, and Rockfort agent, Max Lyon, arrive at the first meeting of the Donley High School ten-year reunion committee. Olivia has interrupted her successful career to find out who killed her former high school best friend. Although the cops have labeled the homicide an isolated incident, Olivia thinks a clever killer has done in several class members, using different murder methods.
Max has the skills to solve the case, but he also knows the territory, since he went to the same high school, although he was the bad boy in a class a few years ahead of Olivia. But a fatherly cop straightened him out. After college, Max joined the Baltimore City Police department and stayed until a bullet wound put him on desk duty. Now he’s completely recovered.
Pretending to be Olivia’s fiancé gives Max access to the reunion group, where everyone is a murder suspect.
Max is definitely an alpha male—tough on the outside but with a hidden tender core. He’s a take-charge kind of guy with a strong sense of right and wrong—which doesn’t necessarily dovetail with the conventional wisdom.
At first, Olivia’s wary of him. Her method of dealing with strong men has been frankly passive aggressive. She pretended to conform to her father’s rules, but snuck out of the house to be with her high school friends. And in her modeling job, she’s let her agent guide her career.
Even before she got together with Max, she vowed to change her life. And now that she’s hooked up with Max, she realizes that a relationship with him could be the key to her future happiness. Even though she’s afraid her past will ruin everything, she finally tells him the secrets she’s been hiding for the past ten years.
And telling him the truth makes all the difference. She doesn’t use tricks to win his love; she uses honesty. She saves her tricks for the reunion killer after he kidnaps her, because she knows that the only way to keep herself alive is to keep him thinking he’s the man she always wanted.
