Excerpt

Tremendous pain engulfed him. Julian’s knees hit the dirt beside her. His vision blurred with hot tears and his heart tore in two, ripping him apart until he felt as though the sense of loss alone would kill him. Emptiness followed in its wake, sweeping up from below and turning him numb. He pulled her off the dusty ground and into his arms, cradling her broken body against the solid armour covering his chest. His hand found hers and he held it, desperately tried to close her bloodied limp fingers around his but they would no longer hold him.

He brought her hand to his face and pressed his lips to the back of it, until he tasted his tears on her skin. Illia was gone. He closed his eyes and buried his face in her long dark hair, holding her tight against him. She couldn’t be gone. What was eternity without his love? She’d given him a cruel gift—a world without her.

“Illia,” he whispered, rocking with her. The Fates had played a terrible trick on him. They had sent him back to Earth too late to save her.

He couldn’t go on without her. He couldn’t bear the pain. How could he live without his heart? It had shattered, scattered on the wind along with her last breath.

His Illia.

Julian looked up at the man who had taken her life. Lycaon. He stood a few metres away, bathed in moonlight and towering over them, his dark armour scarred and his body bloodied from the battle. The warm summer breeze carried the scent of blood and earth, and tousled the long wavy strands of Lycaon’s black hair, blowing them across his face. They caught in the short stubble that covered his jaw. He stood motionless save the rise and fall of his chest with his heavy breathing. His dark brown eyes fixed on Illia where she lay in Julian’s arms. A flicker of regret shone in them and then he turned away, his blood-soaked sword held limp at his side, and walked into the night.

A sickening swirling feeling grew inside Julian. He braced himself, clinging to Illia as he became aware of what was coming.

In the darkness of his closed eyes, he saw horror after horror. Death after death. In one bright blinding burst, he saw the last moments of every incarnation of Illia. He saw their final fight, each more violent and bloody than the last, and witnessed the change in Lycaon. All sign of regret at taking Illia’s life faded until Lycaon showed nothing but glee as he drew out their death, toying with them. They didn’t stand a chance. Nothing Julian did could save them. No amount of time to prepare helped them. Lycaon was too strong—his skill with the sword and his lust for death unparalleled.

Lycaon’s laughter rang in Julian’s ears as he held each incarnation of Illia while they breathed their last and looked at him with fear in their eyes. Every shred of pain Julian had felt compounded into one burning feeling that made him ache to die, but he had to go on, for their sake. He had to continue the duty he had been charged with, regardless of the pain and suffering it caused him to live eternity alone even when he wasn’t, to be denied love and physical contact, to be isolated from humanity. He grieved thirty deaths in one heart-breaking moment until silence shrouded him and he swore he could take no more.

A scream shattered the night air.

He looked up and his eyes widened, horrified by the fight playing out before him. He tried to rise to his feet, to protect her as he had sworn but he couldn’t move. Lauren fought desperately, his own sword in her hands as she struggled against Lycaon. Lycaon forced her backwards, her strength no match for him. Julian reached for her, tried to call her name but no sound issued from his lips. His eyebrows furrowed and he cursed the Fates for making him witness such a terrible act of murder. She wasn’t strong enough. She never was.

Lauren shrieked and clumsily blocked Lycaon’s heavy sword. Lycaon pressed on, using his weight to force her sword down, and cut into her shoulder. She screamed again and turned towards Julian. Julian stretched out his arm to her as she reached for him. Lycaon grinned, triumph shining in his dark malicious eyes.

Julian shouted her name but it was too late.

Lycaon’s blade came down and Lauren arched forwards, the pain in her eyes unbearable, and cried out as the sword cut down her back.

She fell and Julian closed his eyes, not wanting to see Lauren die. He couldn’t take it.

A soft breath caressed his face.

Julian opened his eyes and drew back. Lauren lay in his arms, her eyes swimming with fear. A spray of blood marred her pale cheeks, blending into her red hair at her right temple. Her hand twitched in his and her expression softened. His eyes closed briefly when she brushed the fingers of her other hand across his cheek and smiled up at him. The fear in her deep brown eyes turned to sorrow and, in his heart, he knew that it was for him. Tears rolled down her cheeks, cutting through the blood and dirt. He squeezed her hand, choked on the words that he wanted to say. Her palm cupped his cheek. Her hand turned cold against his skin.

She was so different to them. He needed her more than anything, anyone.

He shook his head, cursed the gods and then wrapped his arms around her and pulled her to him.

“I will not let you die,” he whispered into her hair, raw pain stealing his breath.

Her hand slipped from his cheek and his arms were suddenly empty. He could still sense her. She was alive but distant. Cold stole through his veins, freezing the fragments of his heart. His eyes opened to reveal nothing but eternal darkness. He couldn’t breathe. His heart thundered. The dust choked him. Panic broke over him in a nauseating wave and he scrambled forwards in the inky black.

His hands smacked against something solid and he groped around, finding nothing but icy stone.

No.

Not this again.

Not this.

A muffled scream reached his ears.

Not again.

He looked up in the darkness, knowing that she was above him somewhere, alone and fighting for him, afraid.

Julian’s breathing came in sharp bursts. He dug through the rubble with his bare hands, desperate to escape the cloying darkness. It enveloped him, went down into his lungs and stole his strength away. Another scream. He scrambled up the rocky incline until his head hit the ceiling of his prison. He banged his fists against it, using all of his remaining strength in an attempt to break through and get to her before it was too late. Dust scattered down and filled his mouth and lungs, shortening his breaths. He clawed at the rocks until blood trickled down his fingers.

His heart tightened as everything went quiet.

It became empty as he felt her die.

Illia.

Not this.

Please.

Not again.

“Lauren!”

Julian sat up with a jolt, trembling and cold. He couldn’t breathe. He needed to breathe. He needed to escape. He gulped down air so hard it burnt his lungs. His heart hammered against his ribcage, filling his head with a staccato beat. He needed to get to her.

He clawed at the air and then realised there was nothing there. No rubble blocked his path. No dust choked him. No sound of battle came to his ears.

Gradually, the darkness faded, revealing the unlit bedroom surrounding him. He quickly reached across the bed and fumbled with the lamp on the wooden side table there, almost knocking it over. The light was bright when it came on but it was a relief. He should have turned it on when he had come into the room. He shouldn’t have slept in the dark.

Still trembling, he sat back in the middle of his bed on top of the pale green covers and looked down at himself. He must have fallen asleep before undressing. His jaw tensed and he ran shaking fingers through his hair. Images of his nightmare flashed across his mind and he clenched his fists. He wasn’t there. It wasn’t happening again. The pain in his heart reminded him that it had been once and part of his nightmare could come true.

He needed to see her. He had to make sure that Lauren was alive.

Julian swung his legs over the edge of the bed and tried to stand but his knees gave way. He hit the wooden floor hard. Every muscle in his body quivered—weak and tired, unresponsive. He knelt on all fours, breathing hard, and tried to convince himself to move. He had to move. He had to check that Lauren was safe.

He ripped open the twin clasps that held his coat collar closed and sucked in deep breaths. Slow. Steady.

It took every ounce of his will to crawl to the door across the room and pull himself up. He leaned into the cream wall beside it for support, his legs threatening to give out again. He didn’t dare close his eyes. He didn’t want to go back to the darkness, not until he was able to face it, to bear it for her. Several attempts to open the door failed but eventually it gave and he made it out into the hall, his limbs shaking so much that he felt as though he wasn’t in control.

He wasn’t. Panic and fear were. Two emotions that he was too familiar with for his liking. He grew frustrated at himself for being so weak but the sense of need spiralling through him crushed any strength that anger might have given him. Only his need to see her gave him the will to continue and he stumbled on unsteady legs towards her room, leaning heavily against the wall, and then tripped across the hall to her door. He grabbed the handle to stop himself from falling, determined to overcome the weakness infesting him.

The door opened and he fell into the room, hitting the floor hard. His eyes immediately sought out Lauren. He had to see that she was alright. If he could then this feeling of desperation would pass. Fear would no longer rule him. He would be strong again, for her.

She lay on the bed to his right, the blue bedclothes barely covering her breasts. Moonlight cascaded through the crack between one set of curtains and over her skin, highlighting her peaceful face as she slumbered, unaware of his fear and pain. Relief and comfort eased him and gave him the strength to stand. He pushed himself up and crossed the room to her.

Her heart was calm and her breathing was steady. They soothed him. A need surfaced with him, so intense that he couldn’t deny it. He had to touch her. It didn’t matter that it was forbidden. He needed to feel that she was safe and here with him at last. In this moment, he didn’t just want to break the rules, he wanted to shatter them.

Julian hesitated and then reached out and swept the short strands of her red hair from her eyes. The touch became a caress before he could stop himself and he brushed the backs of his fingers across her forehead. Her skin was warm and soft, smooth against his. His hands trembled, his breathing shaky. He was so weak for her, but this time that weakness felt stronger than ever.

Stronger than his weakness for Illia had ever been. He didn’t understand it. Didn’t try to. He just accepted it. Lauren affected him deeper than her predecessors. He needed her.

His frail legs threatened to give out but he refused to leave. He needed to stay a while, to take in the sight of her until he was sure that she was real and it had only been a nightmare.

Lauren rolled her head into his hand. Her face became shadowed but he could still see her, continued to watch her sleep. His heart whispered that he wasn’t strong enough to lose her this time. He absorbed the soft warmth of her against his hand and vowed that he would do anything to protect her. Anything. He wouldn’t fail Lauren.

His breathing slowed and his heartbeat steadied, matching Lauren’s.

He stroked her cheek, fascinated by the satin feel of her skin. Being with her like this made him realise that something had changed in him over the years and filled him with a sense that his feelings had altered in some way. He felt different.

Lauren’s rosy lips parted in a sigh.

She felt different.

Julian ran his fingers over her brow.

She was beautiful in a way none of them had been.

She smiled in her sleep, as though she could hear his thoughts and was pleased.

At least her dreams were good. She needed her sleep. Soon her nightmare would begin.

He would do all in his power to ensure that she survived.
