Voodoo Zombies are Highly Underrepresented
Thank you so much for having me on your blog!
While I love the movie Warm Bodies and the television show Walking Dead, I think that the zombie apocalypse is kinda getting overdone. I mean, there's been like a hundred movies based on the same premise. I had to go a different direction. Which is why I went with what I like to think of as the more traditional zombie—the Voodoo zombie.
I didn’t know a lot about them (well, other than the fact that they’re scary, ugly, eat brains, and seem to be able to catch up to whomever they’re chasing even though they shuffle along at a pace just barely faster than a three-toed sloth) before writing DEAD SEXY, so I had to do quite a bit of research. Which was absolutely fascinating—and a little freaky.
Turns out there are actually four types of Voodoo zombies. The first is Li Grande Zombi, which is the primary serpent spirit of worship in Voodoo. The second is The Spiritual Zombie, which is created when a witchdoctor makes the lesser of a person’s two souls think the body isn’t dead and uses it to reanimate the person’s corpse. The third kind of zombie is The Bargained Zombie, which is when a person volunteers to let a Voodoo priestess exorcise his lesser soul in exchange for protection with the understanding that he’ll have to surrender the rest of his soul at some point. The fourth zombie is The Herbal Zombie, which is the type of zombie the hero of DEAD SEXY is.
To make an herbal zombie, you need two things—a bokor (a Voodoo priest or priestess who practices both light and dark magic) and zombie powder (made from the poisonous puffer fish, a specific poisonous toad, a tree frog and human remains—ick, ick, ick!). The bokor sprinkles the powder on a person to make them appear dead, then reanimates him later as a being without conscious thought or free will, essentially making him a slave who must obey the bokor’s commands.
The bokor in DEAD SEXY is an evil Voodoo priestess and just to make the whole thing a little more eerie, her zombie powder contains the ashes of a man hanged by the neck until dead (I thought that gave the proper dark feel to the process). But unlike the traditional herbal zombie, the hero is neither mindless or a slave when he turns into a zombie. Which, in some ways, is almost worse. Now, if you ask the bokor, she had good reason to turn the hero into a zombie. As to what that reason is…
Well, you’ll have to read the book to find out!
