READ in the New Year! Prince of Power by Elisabeth Staab (Guest Post/Giveaway)

Happy New Years lovelies and welcome back to our week long event! What better way to kick off 2013 then with the fabulous paranormal romance author, Elisabeth Staab, and her upcoming release of Prince of Power!

A Very Vampire New Year

Happy New Year everyone!

I mean… *whispers* happy new year everyone…

Imma keep my voice down since you’re probably all recovering from a multitude of holiday celebrations over here at Reading Between the Wines. Which is fantastic, because as the superstition goes, what you do at New Years is what you’ll do all year, right?

Now, since today is New Years Day, and for many vampires daytime means Very Bad Things, most of my guys are going to want to chill inside from the daylight. Which doesn’t mean an end to the merriment if our hearts desire. We just want to keep it low key. Since we’re visiting Reading Between the Wines the gang from King of Darkness and Prince of Power have brought along some wine, some fancy cheeses, some nice crisp fresh fruit, and a box of those cute little Ritz crackers shaped like snowflakes. Sometimes it’s festive before fancy.

Now wait! A little warning before we crack open the potent potables. In the Chronicles of Yavn, red wine does funny things to a vampire. Has a special little kick, a kind of “I love you man” warm and fuzzy, so one should proceed with caution, even though the Pinot Noir does pair well with the pears and the camembert…

The human kids had their party-favor club drugs: their weed and their meth and their little purple pills. For vampires, the sweet essence of red wine produced that lovey-dovey, buzzy high. The wine made it okay to crave connection with others. (Isabel, King of Darkness)
Hmm… *looks around* Come to think of it, with the exception of Anton—the hero of Prince of Power—who was born a member of the evil wizard race, and Alexia who is human… Almost everyone of note in this series is vampire. We did just say we wanted to keep things low-key. Last thing we need is some sort of fight breaking out because someone got a little too huggy-kissy and something was misunderstood. You know how easily vampires can get jealous…

[Anton] sneered at Siddoh and started walking in the direction of where they’d parked the cars. “I don’t think you really want to go there.”

Siddoh must have invoked his power to go invisible because the air around Anton stirred and the weight of a heavy arm landed on his shoulder but he couldn’t see Siddoh at all. “I think we do need to go there.”

“And why is that exactly?”

“’Cuz whatever went on before with me and Ty, I’m still out to protect her and I want to make sure we’re on the same page.”

Anton flung off the invisible arm. “I wouldn’t be out here with you at all if I didn’t intend to protect her.” (Anton, Prince of Power)
So… perhaps we’ll just stick to the Riesling and the baked brie.

Oh! And the baked brie is so fancy, but so easy to make yourself. Siddoh, one of our top wizard fighters, he made it himself. You’d never know he’s so handy in the kitchen, would you?

Here’s his quick and easy recipe:

  • 1 sheet of puff pastry or can of crescent roll dough
  • 1 6-8 oz wheel of brie
  • Apricot or raspberry preserves (optional)

Directions: preheat oven according to the pastry directions (about 375 degrees), if using crescent roll dough, roll out flat.

If using the preserves, spread a thin layer over the pastry. (Siddoh: “Don’t be stingy, spread that shit on there like you mean it.”) Obviously, this is a matter of preference.

Place the wheel of cheese in the center of the pastry, wrap it up, and bake according to the directions on the pastry. Easy!

You do not have to remove the rind from the cheese unless you feel strongly about the flavor. Siddoh claims that if you don’t remove the rind it will taste like feet. This too depends on preference, obviously.

And then you’re ready to party! We at the Chronicles of Yavn hope that you all have a safe, loving, prosperous new year full of hunky heroes, thrilling books to read, and free from jealous vampire brawls.

  22. Baked brie is the best - oh yea and this year I tried a new treat - chocolate wine. Yes I said chocolate, one was creamy and smooth, the other a deep red with just a hint of extra dark. Who could ask for more in life, other than perhaps to read your awesome sounding new book. Thank you for sharing with us today and making me smile.

  24. Usually vamps can't get drunk, so I love the idea that red wine can affect them.
