Grave witch Alex Craft can speak to the dead, but that doesn’t mean she likes what they have to say.
As a private investigator and consultant for the police, Alex Craft has seen a lot of dark magic. But even though she’s on good terms with Death himself—who happens to look fantastic in a pair of jeans—nothing has prepared her for her latest case. Alex is investigating a high profile murder when she’s attacked by the ‘shade’ she’s raising, which should be impossible. To top off her day, someone makes a serious attempt on her life, but Death saves her. Guess he likes having her around...
To solve this case Alex will have to team up with tough homicide detective Falin Andrews. Falin seems to be hiding something—though it’s certainly not his dislike of Alex—but Alex knows she needs his help to navigate the tangled webs of mortal and paranormal politics, and to track down a killer wielding a magic so malevolent, it may cost Alex her life...and her soul.
Urban Fantasy may not be as prominent as it was five years ago but that doesn’t mean the stories are any less entertaining and the Alex Craft series is one great UF series!
When this series began back in 2010 the covers were everywhere, garnering rave review and many followers. Grave Witch landed in my TBR list but never moved to the Now Reading list. The plus side of picking up the series today is that, the extremely long awaited, book four comes out in a few weeks! That is a heads up to any of you Urban Fantasy fans who like me put off picking up this series…do it now, you will love it!
So what makes this UF so great? Read the blurb above and you get the gist of the plot but what it doesn’t tell you is how great of a writer Price is. There are so many pieces to put together, intricate characters, and a world both filled with and afraid of magic. Also, Price crafted (ha!) Alex Craft perfectly.
Alex is a woman with grave magic who believes that is the extent of her wyrd abilities. Throughout Grave Witch Alex doesn’t exactly learn more about herself but she pushes her powers to new heights which lead to tons of questions. She isn’t a superhero, she goes blind for a bit after using her grave magic which leaves her vulnerable and dependent on those around her.
As for what goes on around her, well a bunch of trouble is what. There is someone performing ritual killings in Nekros. Alex ends up working with Falin, a someone with plenty of secrets, and follows the trail to her estranged family. In the end she finds the killer and does something outstanding…which leads to Alex questioning her heritage.
An amazing first book to a series with a well built world, strong relatable characters, and so many questions. One mystery snowballs into many with some romance on the side. A great combination.
