Felicity Heaton's Claimed by a Demon King (Guest Post/Giveaway)

Felicity Heaton is joining us with a guest post on writing her newest release, CLAIMED BY A DEMON KING!

Writing Claimed by a Demon King in the Eternal Mates series

It’s great to be here at Reading Between the Wines Book Club today as part of the Claimed by a Demon King Book Tour celebrating the release of the second book in my new Eternal Mates series of paranormal romance novels.

Today, I’m going to talk a little more about writing Claimed by a Demon King.

But before we get to the main event, I want to introduce myself. I’m a British paranormal romance author and a USA Today best-seller. I have been writing since 2005, and went indie in 2006. I love to write big worlds, populated by vampires, shifters, demons, fae and angels, and I have several series. This tour is about the Eternal Mates series, which is actually a spin-off from my Vampire Erotic Theatre series. That series focused on a family of vampires at one theatre in London but it had glimpses into the wider world outside the theatre. It’s that world of fae, dark elves, demons, witches, shifters, and other incredible species that the Eternal Mates focuses on.

Now, on with the show…

When I came up with the idea for the Eternal Mates series, I plotted and planned the first three books in unison. They all overlap with each other, and planning all three at once, giving me the bare bones of each story and many of the main characters in the series, really got me excited about writing the books.

When I introduced King Thorne of the Third Realm at the end of the first book in the series, Kissed by a Dark Prince, I set up a sort of love triangle. I’ve written love triangles that have come to fruition, but this time it wasn’t going to be the case. I’m dealing with fated mates in this series, and while it is possible for one female to have two potential mates, I wanted each character to have their happily ever after. I didn’t feel that was possible with two mates sharing one central lover in this particular series. These men are all extremely possessive and protective, and they don’t share!

I knew from the outset that it was going to make Claimed by a Demon King tough to write. I didn’t want to break anyone’s heart. I was already heavily invested in these characters and knowing one was going to get jilted in favour of another made my chest ache. Plus, I discovered almost immediately after releasing Kissed by a Dark Prince that a certain elf commander seems to have some sort of intense sexual magnetism that lured readers to him like moths to a flame.

That only made writing this book even more difficult. I’m not in the habit of disappointing readers. I’m in the business of giving them satisfying reads that fulfil their every fantasy.

But… at the end of Kissed by a Dark Prince, it was fairly clear who the victor would be in Claimed by a Demon King. I had to stay true to the characters and not be swayed by reader demand. Believe me, it wasn’t easy for me to write this story. I want Bleu to have his HEA as much as the next woman, but it just wasn’t going to happen in this story. Bleu needs to grow a little more before the love of his eternal life can finally come along to knock him on his backside.

It wasn’t just the love triangle that made this book a doozy to write either. It is packed with fights, which I love to write, whether they’re tussles between two suitors or an all-out-battle-to-the-death of epic proportions. It’s packed with passion, both in visions and in reality. Moments so hot that I was left wondering whether they were going to scorch the pages in the next love scene or combust my computer.

It also has twists. I love writing a good twist. Whenever I can write one, I will. I wish that all my books suited twists, but many don’t, and it keeps readers on their toes. Will this book be one with a huge twist? Who knows? It’s always fun writing them though.

And then there was the cast of character. This book has it all. Not just demons who are probably not how many people expect demons from reading other paranormal romances. Thorne is the biggest, most beautiful and brash demon you’ll ever meet. The guy is a poet, and a warrior. He’ll fight to the death for his people and his kingdom, and for the heart of his fated female.

Claimed by a Demon King also has a slew of characters from species who don’t get along. We have vampires, werewolves, elves and humans, all coming together to help Thorne in his battle against the Fifth Realm of demons. Writing the antics of key characters in each of those species kept me on my toes and kept me smiling. As you might expect, there’s a lot more than a little bickering that breaks out between them at times.

I also had a chance to revisit Vampirerotique, the theatre at the centre of the Vampire Erotic Theatre series of which Eternal Mates is a spin off. It was fantastic getting to write characters I knew so well from that series, and knowing fans of that series were going to love those scenes. I felt like I was giving a little something back to my readers with that extended cameo.

On top of all that, I absolutely loved writing Thorne. He’s antiquated due to his age (ah, nearly four thousand years old) and the fact he’s been in Hell for most of that time. He doesn’t know a lot of human customs and messes up a lot in his pursuit of Sable, and there were times he had me laughing at his attempts to woo her, and times he made me melt.

And of course, there’s Sable. She’s not looking for love, or a man to protect her. She’s kick ass, is a demon hunter with a reputation, and knows how to handle herself. She definitely made it hard for the men chasing her, and I don’t think she changed that much by the end of the story. If anything, she only became stronger and even more kick ass.

I think that just like with Kissed by a Dark Prince, it was the cast of characters and how they interacted with each other that made this book fun and exciting to write, and I hope it makes it just as exciting for you to read. These are all characters who have set up home in my heart and now I can’t wait to write more books in this series. There are so many heroes and heroines in waiting.

I hope that when you read Kissed by a Dark Prince and Claimed by a Demon King that these characters will entrance you too and you’ll fall under their spell and will be as eager to read the next book as I am to write it!

I hope you enjoyed this brief insight into Claimed by a Demon King.

Claimed by a Demon King
(Eternal Mates Romance Series Book 2)
Felicity Heaton
The moment the demon King Thorne of the Third Realm set eyes on the mortal huntress Sable, he knew she was his fated one. The fiery, dangerous female awakened hungers he had never experienced before, a dark craving and passion that has consumed him in their time apart. As the lunar cycle wanes, she enters his world again and nothing will stand in the way of him claiming his forever with her—not the relentless assault from the Fifth Realm or the dark elf male determined to seduce her out of his grasp.
Intent on achieving the coveted position of commander at Archangel, Sable leads her small team into the dark underworld and the Third Realm, to a war where her allies are the very creatures she normally hunts—vampires, werewolves, and demons. Her eagerness to lead the deadly mission has everything to do with winning her promotion, and nothing to do with the kingdom’s brash, lethally seductive demon king—a king who stirred fierce desire and wildfire heat in her with just a look and an innocent touch when they first met, and has been in her wicked dreams ever since.
As the gathering storm between rivals unleashes irresistible passion that flares white-hot and the heat of the battle brings life-shattering realisations, can Sable place her duty before her heart? Or will she surrender to her deepest desires and be claimed by a demon king?
Claimed by a Demon King is available from Amazon Kindle, Kobo Books, Barnes and Noble Nook, Apple iBooks stores and other retailers. Also available in paperback. Find the links to your preferred retailer at: http://www.felicityheaton.co.uk/cbadk

  4. I think you did a fabulous job with both books. I loved them both equally and I am particularly excited for Vail's book. It's nice to "get into the head" of the author sometimes because as a non-writer (haha) I imagine it can be tough to get everything linear (especially with several main characters).. thanks for sharing! I look forward to reading the next book in the series :)
