One of the top names in erotica is here with us today to talk about second chances! Welcome Roni Loren!
Roni: Thanks! Great to be here. : )
Lexi: Nice to have you back at Reading Between the Wines Roni! What's your vintage today? A flirty moscato or a bold red? Kind of like your newest release, Need You Tonight. A little flirting, years pass, and now the shy young man is a strong force that demands notice. Kade is one hot character. What is your favorite thing about him?
Roni: Bold red please. : ) And my favorite thing about Kade is how much he’s overcome and how much of a badass he is now. But also that he’s still maintained that sweetness beneath the surface. When he falls, he falls hard, and will do everything he can to win the heroine. He’s also a dad and the scenes with his daughter show what a truly good guy he is.
Lexi: Hard to pick only one thing when you have such a multidimensional character. You certainly transformed this insecure stammerer. And as always, made him steamy inside and outside the bedroom. We have seen Kade before but how long have you known he would have his own story to tell?
Roni: Kade originally appeared in the novella, STILL INTO YOU, and he was just supposed to be a side character. But then he showed up and started talking about John Hughes movies to the heroine and mentioned that he hasn’t always gotten the girl, and I was like—dammit, well, now I need to find out what his story his. This is how most of my heroes show up—planed as side characters then steal the show. I know it makes me sound like a crazy person because shouldn’t I know who I’m writing when I start? But I don’t.
Lexi: Tessa is one lucky woman. To have a man like that push you and guide you, help reveal the real person underneath all the hurt and pressures. Whew! After putting up with her ex she deserves it. Mental abuse is an incredibly difficult thing to get over, if one can ever really get over it. How did you go about delving into her head?
Roni: She definitely deserves a good man. And I think writing her background (and Kade’s) was one of those times I was really happy my background is in social work/therapy. When I did social work, I worked with clients who’d been in abusive relationships and who had been through trauma, so I’m not writing those situations blind. But of course, everyone reacts differently, so the key was finding out how these particular characters would process their pasts and move forward.
Lexi: All this serious talk when we could just be gushing over Kade's delicious smile and abs. Fun to imagine him and also wonder what some past crushes happen to have turned out. Need You Tonight sure makes one think about what would happen if you were given a second chance with an old crush. What would you do Roni, take the chance?
Roni: That makes me think of that old Garth Brooks song about thanking God for unanswered prayers. I am with the perfect man for me. So I wouldn’t want to go back and see how those crushes would’ve worked out if I’d gotten the guy (and I never got the guy back then, lol.) Though, you know, I may have gone back on occasion on Facebook to see how those boys turned out.
Lexi: I love stories about people who knew one another before life changed them, because life does change people and not always for the better. But we in romance land do love our characters to get another chance, especially when you have introduced them to us in such fun ways previously!
Roni: Thanks, Lexi. And yes, I agree. I love reunion/second chance stories. Because I know that if I had met my husband back in high school, we wouldn’t have been ready for each other. (Well, and he would’ve gone to jail because he’s seven years older than me, lol.) But there are times where you may have met your soulmate but neither of you were in the right place to take advantage of it then. So second chance stories give me the chance to explore that.
Lexi: Thanks for stopping by Roni. Congrats on your newest release!
Roni: Thanks for having me!
From foster kid to trophy wife, Tessa McAllen is about to reinvent herself all over again—and defy every insult her cheating ex-husband ever used against her: Selfish? She’s championing a charity. Stupid? She’s getting her degree.
Boring in bed? Kade Vandergriff can help her with that one. When they encounter each other at a singles event held at one of his restaurants, Tessa blurts out that kink is for girls who try too hard, and Kade instantly wants to show this sassy stranger how thrilling a night under his command can be...but when he learns her name, the game changes for both of them.
In high school, Tessa was the popular girl who stuttering, awkward Kade fell for. But she chose another. Now, as she eagerly learns lesson after lesson, he’s going to make sure she never forgets him again.
Roni wrote her first romance novel at age fifteen when she discovered writing about boys was way easier than actually talking to them. Since then, her flirting skills haven’t improved, but she likes to think her storytelling ability has. Though she’ll forever be a New Orleans girl at heart, she now lives in Dallas with her husband and son.
If she’s not working on her latest sexy story, you can find her reading, watching reality television, or indulging in her unhealthy addiction to rockstars, er, rock concerts. Yeah, that's it. She is the National Bestselling Author of The Loving on the Edge series from Berkley Heat.
