Now that she has her freedom, she’s not giving it up.
Dragon shifter Keelin Petronilla spent centuries in forced hibernation dreaming of one thing: freedom. Now she’s living life on her terms—she’s ditched her clan for an unruly wolf pack, she tends bar for a half-demon, and she’s loving it…until a powerful supernatural being targets her. She intends to handle the mysterious attacks on her own…without the help of dragon Alpha Bran Devlin. Sure, he’s sexy in that hot, scowling possessive way, but Keelin wants to live her own life in her own way.
Now that he’s found his mate, he’s not letting her go.
Former black ops agent Bran Devlin is a born dragon Alpha and leader of a fierce clan. Getting mated was never part of his plan—until a feisty dragon princess gets under his skin in a big way. The hell of it is, she doesn’t want a mate; she just wants to have a good time. He plays along, but when a dark and powerful being marks her for death, he’s determined to stay by her side in spite of her protests. Now that he’s found his mate, he means to keep her safe no matter what the cost…even if he has to risk it all.
BEYOND THE DARKNESS by Katie Reus is the third book in Katie's fantastic Darkness series. Even though it is part of a series, it can be fully enjoyed as a standalone without any difficulty as Katie seamlessly fills in any required history from previous installments. I honestly cannot get enough of Katie's dragons and I loved this entry! This is the story of two dragon shifters: Keelin Petronilla, who has just awoken from a forced hibernation, and Bran Devlin, former black ops agent, alpha dragon and leader of his clan. Keelin is the sister of Drake, whose story was told in the last book, TASTE OF DARKNESS.
Keelin has led a sheltered life and has just tasted freedom. She had been coerced into protective hibernation for centuries. She does not want to be shackled again and believes that being mated will be a constraint on her liberty. She loves the modern world and just wants to spread her wings and experience all that she can. To further assert her independence, she has left her clan and is living with the Stavros wolf pack, the pack of Drake's mate.
Enter Bran with two goals. Of paramount importance, he is intent to court Keelin and win her heart. From his first glimpse of her, he knew she was his fated mate. He cannot accept that she does not feel the same way. Secondly, he is investigating the disappearance and killings of dragons. Drake will stop at nothing to keep his mate safe and he won't let anyone stand in his way, including Keelin. But, danger lurks at every turn...
I loved both of these characters. Their romance was sweet and hot. Bran was supportive and protective, but he didn't suffocate her as Keelin had feared. He treated her as his equal because he saw her as his other half.
Following please find a few of my favorite quotes:
“What's the problem?"
"You. All shirtless and stuff. My dragon won't let me fight you." Oh, God. It was so embarrassing even admitting it.”
“Quit staring at my breasts," she hissed with a soft stomp of her heel.
His gaze flashed to hers.
"Why? They're mine.”
“Before she could move or even think, the male shifted to his human form. Bran stood there, all six feet four inches of sexy, pissed off male. His expression was one of pure rage as he stepped toward her. Not that this stopped her from checking out every single naked inch of him. And the man was built. All those hard lines and striations looked as if he'd been carved from marble.”
“I will not interfere with a male dragon while he is rutting.”
Can Katie even write a bad book? I don't think so! Her Darkness series rocks! Katie has created an incredibly diverse world populated by dragons, werewolves, vampires, demigods and demons. I liked that so many favorite characters from the previous books made appearances. It's great catching up with them! I'm hoping that two new characters - Bo and Nyx - will have their story up soon! I highly recommend BEYOND THE DARKNESS to anyone who enjoys well-told, scorching, fast-paced paranormal romances.
