Guest Post with Anna Kyle of Skye Falling

SKYE FALLING has been out about a month now and I am thrilled and thankful at the response it’s gotten so far.  Thrilled because as a debut author the fact that people are buying it and finding it an entertaining read is extraordinary to me, dream-come-true amazing, holy moly pinch me, well you get the picture.  Thankful because it makes me feel like I’ve done my job as a writer – tell a good story, elicit emotions, and make the readers fall in love with my characters before closing the book with a satisfied sigh.

Not every part of this process was dance in the daisy fields. Some days were more like trying to walk through boot-sucking mud. There were times that Skye, usually very loud and clear in my head (much like she is in the book), went silent. I’d be writing and rewriting passages within scenes, trying out one reaction after another yet none of them were…right.  Weren’t true to the character. Sometimes I’d almost convince myself that this was an impossible task; to figure out what a character pulled completely out of someone’s imagination would say/do/think in specific situations.  How did I ever think I could do this?

One night I went to bed, thoroughly disgusted by my pages done that day and as I laid there in the dark I started the troublesome scene in my head like a movie and changing the endings, dozens of times. If Lake does this then Skye would do this but what if she did this?  Or what if he does that? I’d follow that trail, because that’s exactly what it felt like, to how that change would ripple through the story. And repeat.  The next morning I woke up and had my scene where Skye wakes up chained in Lake’s bed and it was perfect.

That brainstorming just before sleep (sleep-storming?) worked more than once for me but by then I was fully immersed in Lake’s and Skye’s journey and knew them very well. The process of writing the story got easier because they ceased to be strangers.

Someone recently asked me once what my favorite things about Skye and Lake individually and as a couple. It took me a long time to answer but here’s what I came up with:

Skye is awesome. She’s funny and smart and always trying to outwit her opponent. That fact that she’s not very good at acting (or keeping the Fae mask on) makes me love her even more.  Lake, well, I just plain adore him.  He’s a smoking hot wolf completely unprepared for the whirlwind that is Princess Skye, so I love the way he adapts and accepts her but doesn’t let her pull any of her sh*t, either. I can't imagine them with anyone but each other, so that’s a darn good team. Five stars as a couple!

It’s not the happy endings that keep me reading and writing romances. It’s the falling; falling in love with the characters as they fall in love with each other. I hope your readers enjoy Lake’s and Skye’s story as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Whispers of the Wolf King’s return after a thousand years absence foretell the resurrection of an ancient evil and stir up hidden enemies. The shapeshifters, magic-users, Omegas (the shifter/mage hybrids), and the Fae must turn their blades, fangs, and claws away from each other and work together to defeat a growing horde that threatens the extinction of them all.  The key to the Others’ future is connected to the past but they’re so busy fighting each other they may not see it in time.

Skye, a Fae-shapeshifter halfing, could die if she doesn’t find out how to wake her dormant wolf, so mere rumors of the Wolf King’s return are enough to convince her to sneak through the portal between Faerie and Chicago in search of his aid. But the dizzyingly bright lights and sounds of the human realm are too tempting to ignore. So is the sexy shapeshifter wolf intent on capturing her—the one who stirs her sleeping wolf just long enough to bind the handsome stranger in a mate-bond.

Lake is willing to do anything to protect the Wolf King, a man he also calls friend. So when he receives word that a Fae princess has slipped into Chicago, he suspects a plot to assassinate the Wolf King. He’s certain capturing her will be as easy as locating her—that was his first mistake. Not only is his wolf a little too interested in Skye, but the wolf accepts her mate-bond without any say-so from him. As he unravels the truth surrounding the smart-mouthed princess and whether she’s hunting his friend or being hunted by someone else, Lake’s mission changes: protect Skye at all costs. And keep her for himself.

About the Author:
Anna wrote her first story at age 12 on her dad’s old manual typewriter and though the technology has changed, she hasn’t stopped since.  She lives in the Midwest surrounded by family and friends and dogs and horses.  They’ve forgiven her (mostly) when they appear in her stories.  She reads everything she can get her hands on but romances, especially paranormals, are her favorite. Vampires, humans, Fae, shapeshifters, or demons, it doesn’t matter - Anna’s heart goes pitter-pat for the Happily Ever After.  Hot heroes + strong, funny heroines = Awesome.  Also a proud RWA member.  meandersandmuses.blogspot.com
