Historical Romance Week with Mary Wine of How to Handle a Highlander (Guest Post/Giveaway)

Hello lovelies and welcome to another Historical Romance Week where spend the week spotlighting our favorite historical romance books and authors! Please give a warm welcome now to Mary Wine who is joining us with her recent release of HOW TO HANDLE A HIGHLANDER!

We love those Historical Romances!!!

Hello everyone! Thanks for having me over today.

The first romance book I bought was a historical. Discovering this amazing genre was a dream come true! I still have that book, it’s ‘So Speaks the Heart’ by Johanna Lindsey. At least for the girl that I was, I adored those men of honor and times gone by.

So here I am, all grown up and writing historical romance. I still read it too. What is it that draws us to it? Well I’ll admit that I do love the clothing. In fact, I make a lot of historical clothing. I do own a bustle and wear it. As the holiday season comes around, I’m debating which bustle dress to wear for New Years Eve.

After that, there are the men. Where else can you find a warrior with a tender side? That’s right, in the pages of a historical romance. Okay, maybe there were a few real ones too but we’re talking romance reading here. There was one thing I could always count on when I picked up a historical romance and that was that the hero would be gallant. There’s a word we don’t use very much today. It’s a great word, packed with honor and devotion.

The reality of history was harsher. I do love to poke around in historical facts and records. Sometimes it’s dry but every now and again I’ll find a law that makes me giggle. Like one that Henry the Eighth passed that made it illegal to have sex in church while the host was being elevated. You know…they don’t make laws unless there is a need, so that one makes me giggle as I think of what couple gained the kings notice during …ah…services.

Sometimes I find my stories among those dry records too. My newest book, How to Handle a Highlander is formed around some of the sharper edges of reality that these people had to deal with. Marriage was a business first. Blood line, money and alliances took precedence over personal feelings. It might sound romantic to be the lairds daughter but you had responsibilities too. In the case of my heroine Moira, she’s charged with wedding an old man, not necessarily because he’s a lecher, but because one of the prime functions of marriage was to produce children. Older men often married young wives for this purpose. A lot of us think..yuck! But if she refuses, his clan will not be thinking very kindly toward her clan. As the daughter of a Liard, you had to think about the trouble insults could start.

Thanks for having me over. You can find ‘How to Handle a Highlander’ in stores and online now.
