A LITTLE TOO HOT by Lisa Desrochers (Guest Post/Giveaway)

Lisa Desrochers is back with the third book in her A Little Too Far series, A LITTLE TOO HOT!

Because my characters live in my head, I do a lot of eavesdropping on their conversations. Here’s one Lexie (A LITTLE TOO FAR) and Sam (A LITTLE TOO HOT) just had.

Lexie pulls herself up to sit on the kitchen counter next to the box of dishes Sam is helping her unpack. “Your guy is an astronaut? You’re serious? I thought you were just yanking my chain.”

Sam unwraps the packing paper off a serving bowl and hands it to Lexie. “He’s not an astronaut yet. He’s still in training. That’s why he went to Houston.”

Lexie cracks a smile. “Houston, we have a problem,” she says in a very bad Tom Hanks impersonation.

Sam rolls her eyes.

Lexie’s mouth pulls sideways and her eyes narrow. “I just can’t believe he left you here after everything he put you through. He owes you, Sam.”

Sam tries to hide her smile, but her insides burst into a thousand fireworks remembering their last night together. “Oh, he’s made up for that, believe me. And I told him to go. He needs to do this. Astronaut Candidate Training is a big deal.”

Lexie pulls a coffee mug out of the box and sets in on the shelf. “Still…”

The front door opens and the muscles in Trent’s arms ripple as he sweeps into the apartment with two stacked moving boxes. He sets them on the floor near the door and grins at Lexie. “Hey, wife.”

Lexie slides off counter and grins back. “Hey, husband.”

Trent glances at Sam on his way across the room. Sam rolls her eyes and turns her back as Trent lifts his stepsister-turned-wife off the floor and presses a kiss to her mouth, but she can’t help smiling.

“You can turn around now,” Lexie says.

Sam turns and rolls her eyes again when she sees her best friend and her new husband, who happens to be Sam’s ex. Trent is pressed between Lexie’s knees where he’s lifted her back onto the counter. “You two need to turn off the glow. You could blind a person.”

“I have to get to work,” Trent says, setting a kiss to Lexie’s forehead. “You okay getting the last of this unpacked?”

Lexie nods and surveys their new apartment. Her mouth pulls into a glowing smile. “Yeah. I got it.”

He kisses her again, slow on the lips. “Stop by the shop later if you want to get dinner,” he says, drawing away.

“Okay,” Lexie answers, breathily.

“God, you guys make me sick,” Sam mutters, knowing full well she’s just like this when her man is around.

Trent kisses Lexie again, a quick peck, then moves to the door, giving her one last smile on his way out.

“You two really are disgusting,” Sam says, “and I’m so happy for you.”

Lexie grimaces a little as she pulls her eyes away from the door. “You are? Because I wouldn’t blame you if you were still pissed. I should have told you. I just…”

“Listen…I knew Trent never loved me. He told me from the beginning he had feelings for someone else. I just never thought it would turn out to be you,” Sam says, shoving Lexie’s shoulder. “I was hoping I could change his mind, but seeing you two together, it’s pretty clear that was never going to happen. I was really mad for a long time, and it got me nowhere but into trouble. I’m over it now. So, yeah. I’m really happy for you. It’s pretty damn obvious you two belong together.”

Lexie scoots off the counter and wraps her friend in a hug. “Thanks, Sam.”

Sam presses her forehead to Lexie’s and fights the tears pressing at the backs of her eyes. “Anything for my best friend.”
