The Power of Book Covers
By Maya DeLeina

"A picture is worth a thousand words".

As an avid vampire erotica reader, a book cover image is what lures me to read the blurb of the book, which ultimately leads to me hitting the purchase button on my kindle. If the storyline was one that took me on a wonderful journey, captivating all of my senses and most importantly, had a book cover image that captured the essence of the characters and the intensity of the story, it then becomes a paperback purchase that is bound to be tucked away on my little bookshelf to be experienced all over again one day.

So obviously, nothing frustrates me more than having a book cover where the models don’t even come close to depicting the look of the characters the author set out to capture or the image had nothing to do with the story.

I certainly didn’t want this to happen to one of my stories.

When it comes to completing cover art questionnaires, I spend a lot of time developing how I covey the story and the heart of characters to the artist. Ultimately, I condense the storyline down to two powerful words. Sometimes, this is harder than penning the actual story! But in the end, I think it works since I have been blessed with three luscious book covers that depict what I set out to capture.

See what two words I used to describe the story to the artist, what feeling I wanted to evoke for a reader and you can be the judge on how well the covers did.

Wild lust

In Flesh Fantasy, book one of the Ambrose Heights Vampire series, I wanted to capture the wild spirit of my heroine, Rain and the bold masculinity of vampire guardian, Rhys Matthews. The story is built from lust, where raw desires are unleashed and nothing is taboo. I didn’t want a lovey-dovey scene, yet I didn’t want reveal the passion that explodes between Rhys and Rain. What I set out to tell the reader is this is the story of two fiery souls that is a fast-paced, heart-stopping, cliff-hanging, intense read.

Destined hearts

For Veil of Seduction, book two of the Ambrose Heights Vampire series, the storyline is all about the purity of love, self sacrifice, and the prevailing strength of the human spirit. Through a loving embrace, I wanted the reader to understand that this was the touching love story of vampire leader, Steffan Matthews and Anya. But more than just an embrace, the cover is meant to depict and man and woman so rapt in each other that the world around them doesn’t exist. Although a part of the same series, side by side, a reader can quickly tell between the two covers what kind of ride they’re about to experience.

Dark Liaison

For my new series, My Naughty Vampire, Blood of Luna, book one, I wanted readers to know, without a doubt, that this was going to be a series true to its name- naughty. Beyond naughty, I wanted a sinister sensuality, a sense of danger and a spark of mysticism to emanate through the cover image. And with Jimmy Thomas landing on the cover as my naughty shirtless vampire in a cave about to bite Luna with his eyes open, you just can’t go wrong with that.

  1. Great post! Covers do tell the reader so much. I have picked up books just because of the cover, never reading the back. And I have skipped over (later to find out good) books because of bad covers.
You sure have done well conveying the feel of your books, the covers seem to match very well!
