Enemy Within by Angeline Kace (Guest Post/Giveaway)

Please give a warm welcome to author, Angeline Kace, joining us on tour with her book - Enemy Within!

Angeline Kace on Writing the Second Book in a Series

Enemy Within took me much longer to write than I ever imagined it would. But man, there is a lot of pressure on an author when writing a second book. The dreaded “sophomore slump” being one of them. And for a while there, I put more pressure on myself than I should have. I remember wanting so badly for everyone to like this second book. It was almost like I set myself up for an unattainable goal. I had this idea that I had to write Enemy Within so that it turned out so amazing, all the people who were on the fence or didn’t enjoy Descended by Blood would change their minds about this series.

But that’s just crazy-sauce! When I finally realized how high that outrageous bar was, I was finally able to let go of a lot of those unrealistic expectations and could just enjoy the characters and the world again.

So that was the major thing that blocked me with this book for so long. But there were other little things too. One was that I really wanted to write this book with Brooke and Mirko alternating point of views. Well, actually, Mirko wanted to get his say, and he just would not shut up about it. Tenacious guy, he is. So after deliberating and worrying so long about how “it just wasn’t done (at that time, anyway) that authors change up narrators mid series,” I went with what I knew would be best for the story and added Mirko’s point of view. That helped a ton to get the writing juices flowing again. Suddenly, cool scenes and knowledge that was off limits to me—and the reader—became available.

Things went well until I got to a certain point in the book. And then it was like I hit a brick wall. I tried so many different things to get unstuck, but nothing was working. Finally, I attempted to just shut out everything and write. However that would be, just get words on the flippin’ page. So I wrote, and wrote, and wrote.  And I found this model who I thought made the perfect Mirko. Meet Kerry Degman, or as I like to refer to him, Mirko: http://pinterest.com/pin/245516617158332958/

The words finally came out, but they did so in present tense. But I loved all of it. I loved it so much that I decided I was going to keep it all in present tense and would go back through everything that was already written and change it all from past tense to present tense. Lots of extra work, but I loved my writing in present tense.

Being on the other side of Enemy Within, it was definitely more difficult for me to write than Descended by Blood was, but I also love this book more than Descended by Blood. I believe this is a stronger book with stronger writing, and I couldn’t be more satisfied with the finished product.

And Mirko wants me to add that if I would have just trusted him, things would have been okay. He’d never have let me down.

No, Mirko, I guess you wouldn’t have.
