The Mageri Series by Dannika Dark (Guest Post/Giveaway)

Please give a warm welcome to author Dannika Dark who is joining us with her urban fantasy romance series, The Mageri.

The Mageri Series: World building

It's great to be here at Reading Between the Wines as part of the Mageri Series blog tour. Thanks so much for having me! I thought I would give readers a little insight as to what was involved in creating the world in my series. Zoe is the victim of a senseless attack and wakes up to find that she's changed. Not just physically, but there are some new abilities that she's having difficulty in controlling. I wanted to tackle the "What if this happened to you?" theme by introducing a world of immortals and other supernaturals and finding a way to incorporate them within our own. I also liked the idea of a little mystery, and slowly revealing facts as the series progresses.

But, what if? If a man could live a thousand years, what kind of man would he truly become? Part of that also stems from the kind of man he was to begin with, before he was made into an immortal. You see, a Mage can create another Mage from a human. But not just any Mage can do this because it's a rare gift to be a Creator. Thousands of years ago, civilization as a whole was primitive. Men needed to protect what was theirs: territory, wealth, and their own life. If you could create a Mage, then you would select strong men who would protect what’s yours. Warriors. Perhaps even ruthless men.

It was also intriguing to think about how an immortal would acclimate with our modern society. While some go with the flow, others may have more trouble. We see a few examples in this book, one being Justus De Gradi, Ghuardian of the protagonist (and one of my favorite characters). He may love his expensive cars, but he feels more comfortable without electricity or modern gadgets. Would an immortal be forward thinking simply because of their age? Does age always bring wisdom? I started to think about some of the older generations, and how they often hold onto their values and beliefs from when they were younger.

I decided to put a spin on what a Mage was, but in a believable way. Instead of giving them powers of magic and sorcery, they are wielders of light and energy. There are also some new and exciting Breeds in this book that were developed for this world: Chitahs, Relics, Sensors, and Gemini. Yes ladies, there are other supernaturals out there that are sexier than a Vampire. ;-)

The protagonist is struggling with what her place is in this world, and wanting to change it. She’s one of the few who was brought over against her will, so she’s not as obedient and accepting of their rules. However, relationships are the foundation of this series. Developing a character who evolves with the story was exciting; it gave me the opportunity to not only show her own struggles and growth, but also how she impacts the lives around her.

The most exciting thing about being a writer is taking a blank sheet of paper and building a world. One that the reader wants to step inside of, walk around, and be a part of. A world that is not just about conflict, but is also about friendship, love, change, and a little bit of humor. Each Breed is different in their beliefs and the laws that govern them, so it will be exciting to slowly unravel this universe to the readers through this series, and several others that are in line for publication.

  5. Good luck, everyone!

The idea for the Mageri Series came from a Vampire novel I couldn't bring myself to finish. It has nothing to do with Vampires, but it sparked my imagination to run in a completely different direction with telling a story in a new way, leading the reader without them knowing where you're taking them. :)

  11. Hi Dannika! On your comment about the most exciting thing about being a writer; I'm in awe of writer's imagination especially those who write in the non-contemporary genre. I have no imagination whatsoever & I'm always amazed with what authors come up with.
