Jo Watson's Top 5 Summer Destinations
Transkei, in South Africa- this is a stretch of South Africa that is wild and untouched. You could walk on the beach naked if you wanted and would probably not bump into another soul. We had a cottage down there on the beach and used to spend all our Christmas holiday there (which in South Africa, is summer) We have boiling hot Christmas holidays here in Africa- no snow in sight!
Mauritius- It’s a small island off Africa and a favorite holiday destination. I set “Almost a Bride” there. It’s tropical, with white sands, turquoise waters and long, pink umbrella filled cocktails. Most of the hotels there also have amazing kids clubs, which keep the children super busy all day so that they pass out at night- you can actually have a adult holiday there which is always a massive bonus.
Zanzibar- Also an island off Tanzania in Africa and one of my most favorite places. I’m hoping to set a book there too. Not only is it a tropical paradise but it’s also very culturally interesting and steeped in history. Fun fact; Freddy Mercury of Queen was born there in Stone Town and there’s a beachfront bar called Mercury’s named after him.
Maldives- I’ve visited a lot of tropical islands, but this one is the epitome of tropical. It takes tropical-ness to a whole new level. I’m desperate to go back there and eat in the underwater restaurant where you can watch colorful fish swim past as you nibble on your starters. Those villas built on stilts in the water are also the ultimate in summer, holiday luxury.
Cape Town in South Africa- It’s consistently voted the most beautiful city in the world, and it really is. I love going there, but the throngs of tourists in summer can become a little overwhelming.
