Bad Mouth by Angela McCallister (Guest Post/Giveaway)

Today I would like to give a warm welcome to author, Angela McCallister, who is joining us with her book - BAD MOUTH!

A Mini-Vacation Wrapped in a Book Cover

So you thought reading a book only gave you a story to lose yourself in? Well, you certainly get that, but it’s also a great opportunity to “travel.” One of my favorite aspects of reading is getting that bit of flavor of a new setting or even a lifestyle. I’ve never even been on a working ranch, but I can just about taste the dust and feel the culture of ranching life in Lorelei’s Rough Riders, for example. Every book is another opportunity to experience another place or even another time.

Bad Mouth is set in the Pacific Northwest, primarily in the Seattle area. I’ve lived in several different places in Washington, having grown up in the Pacific Northwest. It can get quite drizzly and dreary so it made a great setting for vampires, who naturally abhor the sunlight—hey, Washington does get plenty of sun, too, I assure you, lol.

Historic Gasworks Park where Eva came across a crime scene!I’ve always loved Seattle. There are so many quirky little places and features many don’t hear about or get to see, so I’ve incorporated many of these into the setting of Bad Mouth. Gas Works Park is one of my favorites. It’s a 19-plus acre industrial site-turned-recreational park, a fun, unique place to visit. I mention the little, colorful townhomes in Wallingford that somewhat model the colorful homes in Italy. The old Fisher flour mill on Harbor Island really did have one of the piers catch on fire several years ago. Later in the Immortalis series, you’ll get a glimpse of the Seattle Underground, Pike Place Market (with its strange wall of gum), the Fremont Troll, the historic Pioneer Square, and the Bavarian-style Leavenworth nearby.

Now when you get a chance to visit Seattle after reading Bad Mouth, you’ll know all the best places to go. What settings have appealed to you the most? Have there been books that inspired you to visit a particular place?

Before I sign off, thank you so much, Crystal, for inviting me to your blog!

ABOUT BAD MOUTH
After her ex-husband’s obsession with vampires, Valerie Craig is on a mission to stop transformations. Of all vampires, Kade Rollins is the worst of the worst, but when multiple murders plague Seattle, Val is forced to enlist his aid. Kade’s crude wit and seductive nature attract her like no other, but she can’t ignore his violence toward his human servants, no matter her yearning to forget.
She’s torn when she learns Kade may be behind the murders. Val's worked hard to protect humans from vampires, but the truth surrounding the murders could ignite a bloody battle between their races, one humans are sure to lose. Someone is pulling strings to build a vampire army and spark the war—setting Kade up to kick it off. But if she trusts the vampire prince, she risks her job, her integrity, and her heart if he betrays her as all the men in her life have.

  1. I read a book set in New Zealand and really want to visit. Setting to me is not as important as the story.

  2. Being a Washington native I always gravitate toward books set there. Your mention of Leavenworth made me do a little *squee* 'cause it's been ages since I've been there. So many great little shops to find cool treasure in!

I find that I wind up wanting to go to the places that an author makes up such as bars or shops or even small towns. Which means revisiting the stories they come from. :)

    Great post Angela!

  3. No I haven't been inspired yet to visit except for Scotland; I've read Julie Garwood books and her settings are so tempting!

  8. So funny that many of you mentioned Scotland and England. I've been on a crazy-long Highlander kick and have devoured the Highland Guard series, Vonda Sinclair, Maya Banks, Margaret Mallory, and I'm hunting for more at the moment. The castles really do make you want to go there.

I love to also see the familiar in books set in places I've been, much like Seattle. Hey, my sister owns cabins just outside of Mt. Rainier. Was thinking of doing a writer's retreat up there. Ahhhh. Hot tub on the deck, too :) Speaking of settings, lol. I've been stationed in Everett and in Bremerton and I lived in Tacoma when I joined the Navy. I'm certain I've been to Enumclaw :)

My situation's hard to explain, but though I'm stationed in Cali, I'm a Washington resident and my house is in Vancouver (oh, I miss Voodoo Doughnuts!) My DH and five kids live up there while I work down here. This, of course, is what spurred my writing and reading habit. Gotta distract myself somehow.

I did almost get to Australia/New Zealand, but then Sept 11 happened, and we spent over 3 months underway with no ports and working 7 days per week. A terrible situation all-around. Hardest part was being cut off from communication for so long, worse than even never seeing land.

Some day I'll write a book set in Thailand. I've been to Phuket and Pattaya, and it's my fav country outside of the US to visit.

I really appreciate everyone coming by to comment and all your interest in Bad Mouth. Rhi, thanks again for the great review, and Crystal, you are amazing for inviting me here!

  10. I love the ranch life portrayed in the Rough Riders series as well. Lorelei definitely does cowboys right. I love traveling and reading definitely inspires some of the locations I travel to. Thanks for sharing today!

  11. I think mostly it's been the historical romance books that I've read that make me want to visit Scotland and Wales. Maybe someday.

    1. I have to mention that nearly all Eastpac Sailors (I'm a Westpac--Thailand's my fav!) say Greece was their favorite port to pull into. I'd love to make it there eventually :)
