My Book Club with Cara Sue Achterberg of Practicing Normal + #Giveaway

Let me tell you about my book club. We read between the wines, too. In fact, a lot of nights we just drink the wine. And yet, our love of reading is what’s brought us together for over a dozen years now.
The hostess gets to pick the book. We only get one pick a year, so most of us obsess a bit about it. I’ve picked more duds than winners in the past, but I’ve discovered that sometimes when we there’s mixed reviews on a book we have a better discussion than when everyone loves it!

At our meetings, the hostess also provides the wine. Everybody else brings food – many times it’s something decadent or something they could never cook at home because their kids (or husbands) would never eat it.

5 Year Blogiversary #Interview with author Randi Cooley Wilson of Restoration! (#Blogiversary #Giveaway)

Who is ready for more blogoversary fun!? We had to invite a fellow wine lover who also happens to be a talented author…welcome Randi Cooley Wilson!

Lexi: What is your wine of choice, Randi? We are going all out and have a variety. Sort of like your variety of genres you write: NA Paranormal, Fantasy, and Contemporary Romance. Do you change the kind of wine you drink with the type of book you are writing?

Hi! Thank you so much for having me here today to celebrate your blogoversary. I’m very excited to be part of this special occasion. This might just be my favorite interview ever because I’m allowed to discuss wine!

Okay, my personal wine of choice is Cabernet Sauvignon. My husband happens to be a certified sommelier and tends to spoil my wine palette. As a creature of habit, I don’t tend to change wine with genre of writing.

Wine Club #Review of Vicious Cycle by Katie Ashley

 Book Selection:
Vicious Cycle
by Katie Ashley

Wine Selection:
Jeremy McGrath

Lexi: This month’s wine club pick introduced a new author for me, I love that! Ashley surprised me with her ability to paint a vivid picture with her words. From the opening chapter of Vicious Cycle I was pulled into this dark world of violence and strong characters. Regardless of what anyone thinks of the plot and characters there is no denying Katie Ashley can write. What was your first impression, Crystal?

December Wine Club Review: Holiday on Ice by Jaci Burton (#Giveaway)

Book Selection: Holiday on Ice
 By Jaci Burton

Wine Pairing: Ice Wine from Ohio

Lexi: Nothing says holiday cheer quite like a good love story on ice along with a cold glass of Ice Wine. And for those of you who are fans of Jaci Burton you will appreciate this little novella. We have met Stella and Trick, Patrick, before and now we get to see them get their second chance at love. Besides the ice, Burton has a knack for describing hockey that is as smooth as a frozen lake; my favorite part of Holiday on Ice was Trick. How about you?

July's Wine Club Review of Out of Control by Stephanie Feagan

Wine Selection: Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
*a dry red wine with flavors of dark fruit and caramel tempered with hints of spice and cacao

Paired with: Out of Control by Stephanie Feagan

Lexi: Oil rig fires, gunshots, and one sexy man with thick eyelashes...yup, that is what you get inside Out of Control. Did you know anything about oil fires before you read this? I know I sure didn't, but now I have the image of hot sweaty men dressed in fire suits stripping down to reveal nothing underneath!

Crystal: Mmm...hot sweaty man zipping down his fire suit to reveal hot sweaty abs...what was the question again? Oh yes, oil fires! I had no clue about oil fires until this book and I have to admit, I am amazed and also fascinated by how much work goes into it and the process used to put one out. The author was very detailed in her descriptions which I appreciated.

Darcy Burke’s Secrets & Scandals Series (Guest Post/Giveaway)

Good morning lovelies, I hope everyone had a fab weeked! Today I would like to welcome historical romance author, Darcy Burke, over who is joining us with a fun & very fitting post and giveaway!

Wine Pairing: Oregon Pinot with Darcy Burke’s Secrets & Scandals Series

I live on the edge of Oregon’s Pinot noir wine country in the northern Willamette Valley. Our climate here is similar to France, which enables us to produce Pinot noir that rivals those crafted in France, and in some cases surpass. I love Pinot noir and think Oregon Pinots are among the very best in the world. I thought it would be fun to pair an Oregon Pinot noir with each of my books. Read on for information about each wine* and book, and why I paired them!

*For simplicity, I did not select specific vintages.

October's Wine Club #Review: Wicked Beat by Olivia Cunning

October Wine Club

The Perfect Pairing:

Lexi: How to pick...how to pick? The Sinners are one rock group I would pay good money to go see in concert. If only they were a real band. *sigh* But they sure are real when you pick up one of Olivia Cunning’s books! So lets get down to it girls. Who is your favorite Sinner now that we have finally gotten Eric’s story?

Crystal: Ya' know, even though I don't really care for how Brian's character has developed since his book, Backstage Pass, Brian 'Master' Sinclair is still my favorite Sinner. I'm going with his 'original' character from that book, one of my first book boyfriends ;-) , and NOT on how he acted in Double Time. They don't call him "Master" for nothing and I do love me some magic fingers! Bwahaha!

Crystal L: My favorite Sinner is Trey Mills. And calling him a sinner is very apropos, isn't it? *winks* In reading order his book, Double Time, comes after Eric's, but was technically released before Eric's. And I have to say, after reading Eric's story I love Trey even more!

4 Wine Glass #Review for Mogul by Joanna Shupe

30164606Title: Mogul
Series: The Knickerbocker Club #3
Author: Joanna Shupe
Format: Kindle/Mass Market Paperback, 352 pages
Published: January 31st 2017 by Zebra
ISBN: 1420139886

Reviewer: Crystal
Rating: 4 out of 5 Wine Glasses

The privileged members of the Knickerbocker Club can never climb too high up the social ladder. But for one charming New York bachelor, does the ascent take precedence over love in the Gilded Age?

As owner of a well-respected national newspaper, Calvin Cabot has the means to indulge his capricious taste for excess—and the power to bring the upper crust of society to its knees. So when a desperate heiress from his past begs for his help, Calvin agrees . . . as long as she promises to stay out of his way. Except, like the newsman, this willful beauty always gets what she wants.

Lillian Davies lives a life brimming with boundless parties, impressive yachts, and exotic getaways. But when her brother disappears, Lily knows that blood runs thicker than champagne and she'll spare nothing to bring him back alive. Unfortunately, the only man who can help her is the one she never wanted to see again. Can Lily keep Calvin at arm's length long enough to save her brother and protect her name . . . even when the tenacious powerbroker turns out to be absolutely irresistible?

Crystal's Thoughts:
The The Knickerbocker Club is a fascinating series from author Joanna Shupe about four business tycoons set in the late 19th Century New York - the Gilded Age. In a time of great industrial growth and invention, there is a thick line between "new" money and old money, and women are still confined to the background. With rigid social strictures and very little influence. Lillian Davies is not one to let gender or status hinder her from doing what needs to be done though...

Reading and Wine, a guest post by author Julia London (#Giveaway)

Today we have the multi-book author Julia London here to talk about book clubs. What better place to talk about book clubs than here at Reading Between the Wines! Cheers!

I enjoyed reading the 'about' section of your blog and oddly enough, I came into my very own book club very much the same way!
Statistically speaking more women read than men (I actually mention that in THE BRIDESMAID) and more women drink wine than men, so it’s no coincidence that women would bond over great books and wine.

A few years back I was pleasantly surprised when a local group of women asked if I’d be willing to come and talk with them after they chose one of my books for their monthly selection. I was even more pleasantly surprised to find the nicest group of intelligent, (I mean, they did choose my book, after all…LOL) kind, funny women and to top things off they had WINE.

August's Wine Club Review of Viper by Patricia A. Rasey

Wine Selection: Vampire Cabernet Sauvignon California 2011 (Because I couldn't help myself with the cliche')
*Full-bodied with Blackberry and Dark Cherry aromas, with just the right amount of Oak flavors leading to a lingering finish. Classic, small-lot fermentations, followed by aging with oak, gives full expression to the rich varietal flavors in this wine.

December's Wine Club Review: A Vampire's Christmas Carol by Cynthia Eden

Book Selection:
A Vampire's Christmas Carol
by Cynthia Eden

Lexi: Christmas is the time to share some wine and surround yourself with loved ones. It can be a particullarly difficult time for those who have lost someone close or those who must spend the holiday alone. That is three things most of us are blessed to have. Unfortunately for our hero in A Vampire’s Christmas Carol, Ben has none of that. Unless he had wine and we just didn’t see it. In your opinion what was the worst thing Ben had to deal with?

Crystal: LOL I missed the wine too if he had it! I wasn't sure what to think of Ben at the beginning, but Cynthia Eden put a wonderful spin on this lonely vampire's tale. I think that the worst thing that Ben had to deal with though was the guilt over loosing Simone. Not only did he loose the one woman he loved, and the only person he cared about in life, but he felt responsible for her death as well and carried that with him throughout the last ten years.

Crystal L: Ben was a lonely guy. He'd lost the love of his life, his human life, and he had no hope. My heart seriously hurt for him. All of those issues made me want to root for his HEA from the very beginning.

Swinger's Club by Mia Moore (Spotlight)

We're excited to share with you a sexy romance from Mia Moore, Swinger's Club. Enjoy the excerpt below!

Swinger's Club
by Mia Moore
Goodreads | Amazon
Josh and Carrie have been married for ten years and well...their sex life has gotten dull and predictable. When they move to a new city, their vivacious Realtor, Sylvia, suggests a threesome. At first Carrie is shocked but the idea is fermenting in her brain. And Josh? He loves Carrie and if she wants to experiment and go to a Swinger's Club, he's all in.
The friendly people they meet at the club and a few drinks leads to soft swinging. It was a blast and now they think they're ready to take it to the next level-full swinging with beautiful Sylvia and her hunky husband Byron.
It was so much fun they visit Sylvia the next day and are introduced to another couple, Joan and Robert. Carrie's not sure she likes Joan. When Josh was with her, she brought out the primal animal in him. Why has he never dominated Carrie the way he did with Joan.
From there they graduate to a full fledged, swinging party where Carrie's fantasies become memories. They've made lots of great friends, shared laughs and had sizzling hot sex with them. But the best thing of all is the renewed love and lust they have for each other.

He scared me. He thrilled me. And after one touch, all I could think about was getting more…
Makayla never thought she’d set foot in an underground mixed-martial arts club. But if anyone needs a medic on hand, it’s these guys. Trouble is, at her first sight of the club’s owner she’s the one feeling breathless.
All sleek muscle and restrained power, the man they call Torment plays to win at any cost. Whether it’s in the ring or in the bedroom, he knows exactly when to use a soft touch and when to launch a full-on assault. He always knows just how far he can push. And he’s about to tempt Makayla in ways she never imagined…

Crystal's Thoughts:
Against the Ropes is a case of the inside (story) not living up to the outside (cover). Sexy half nekkid man with gloves, which usually equals sexy MMA alpha male hero to swoon over. Am I right? And I liked the premise of an underground MMA club in need of an medic. Unfortunately the story did not deliver.

May's The Wine Club Review & Selection ~ Back to Buckhorn by Lori Foster

Wine Club Selection

Book: Back to Buckhorn
~Buckhorn Brothers #7
by: Lori Foster

Wine: Fieldstone’s La Crescent
~a semi-sweet white

Lexi: This isn’t the last Sunday of the month (we missed it!) but we still need to toast Crystal L. for choosing Back to Buckhorn, book 7 in the Buckhorn Brothers series by Lori Foster. As a reader who hasn’t ever picked up a book in this series I was delightfully surprised! And I never felt lost, the story flowed and characters were introduced without making me feel as if I were on the wrong side of an inside joke. Now I have to go find books 1-6!

Crystal L: Ohhhhh, I LOVE THIS SERIES. I would recommend the Buckhorn Brothers Series to anyone and everyone! Lets just say, that if I didn't already live in Kentucky, I'd want to pick up and move to Kentucky in search of some fine Kentucky men like the ones in this book! ☺
