A grand estate, terrible secrets, and a young woman who bears witness to it all. If V. C. Andrews and Kate Morton had a literary love child, Emma Rous’ The Au Pair would be it.

Seraphine Mayes and her twin brother Danny were born in the middle of summer at their family’s estate on the Norfolk coast. Within hours of their birth, their mother threw herself from the cliffs, the au pair fled, and the village thrilled with whispers of dark cloaks, changelings, and the aloof couple who drew a young nanny into their inner circle.

Now an adult, Seraphine mourns the recent death of her father. While going through his belongings, she uncovers a family photograph that raises dangerous questions. It was taken on the day the twins were born, and in the photo, their mother, surrounded by her husband and her young son, is beautifully dressed, smiling serenely, and holding just one baby.

Who is the child and what really happened that day?

One person knows the truth, if only Seraphine can find her.

Lexi’s Review:
The Au Pair’s twists and turns will leave your mind reeling and the pages turning until you reach the end because only then will you be able to put it down. But that doesn’t mean you’ll stop thinking about it. This book is one of those that you’ll wake up the next morning still contemplating.

Seraphine and Danny are twins born at the Summerbourne estate which sits at the end of a long drive beyond a small village. The family has lived there for generations but it has been a very long time since any children were actually born in the summer. Odd? That’s not even the beginning of the oddities, and Serephine is determined to figure them out.

The whispers have filled the village since before she was born;  the estate is cursed, no twins will survive, and after Seraphine and her twin arrived the talk accused them of being changelings. When her father passes away Serapine comes across a photograph, one from the twin’s birthday, a family picture where her mother is holding one baby. Her grandmother doesn’t know which one of them is in the picture so Serephine tracks down the au pair, their nanny, who took the shot.

But before Seraphine can talk to her she starts receiving warnings to stop asking questions or lose her family. Burned grass, messages on the bathroom mirror, none of it can stop her from digging. Seraphine uncovers the life of the au pair and an old family friend.

This book is a thrilling, suspenseful perfection of a read. You seriously wont be able to put it down as Seraphine uncovers the family secrets piece by piece. You’ll consider paranormal interference, the reality of curses, and the fallout of tough decisions. Told in a switching POV from the present sleuthing from Seraphine and the past view from the au pair you’ll slowly learn the truth that finally is revealed in a stunning ending.

If you’re in the mood for a tale of a young woman unsure of her place in the world simply looking for love and the deep dark secrets a family would go to the grave to protect, pick this up.
