Today I have the pleasure of welcoming author Sarah Bower over with her new historical novel, The Needle in the Blood. 

Thanks for inviting me to guest post on your wonderfully and wittily named blog! Wine and a good book. What more could one want? You asked me to tell you a little about my research.

Historical research is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, you must do enough to be able to make readers believe in your fictional world. On the other hand, if the novelist falls too much in love with her own research and puts too much of it into the narrative, she is in danger of boring readers.

Some years ago, I was asked to assess a manuscript for a beginning novelist. Her story was set during the Monmouth Rebellion and included a sub-plot involving piracy. One scene in the novel involved an attempted seduction, on a beach at night, while the pirates, unknown to the lovers, were unloading illegal alcohol. So the million dollar question is, will the seduction be completed or will the pirates stumble across the lovers and kidnap them or worse? So far, so good, until the author began describing the seducer removing his mistress’ clothing. This went on for several pages and listed in meticulous detail every item of clothing the girl was wearing. Long before the end of it I had almost lost the will to live! Clearly the author had undertaken meticulous research into 17th century costume, but had used it at the expense of the tension she should have maintained in the scene.

Have you ever wondered where you go when you die?

Haven’t we all at some point? I used to do it a lot as a kid. Is heaven for real and what is it going to be like once I get there? What kind of a body will I have? What will I look like? Will all of my family come with me? Will I meet my grandmother there?

When I was a child I remember reading Astrid Lindgren’s “The Brothers Lionheart”. To those who don’t know it, it is a book about two brothers that both die and goes to the country Nangijala, a land in "the campfires and storytelling days". Here the brothers experience great adventures. Together with a resistance group they lead the struggle against the evil Tengil, who rules with the aid of the fearsome fire-breathing dragon Katla. It is really a very beautiful book and I remember how it made me look upon death in a totally different way. Like it could actually be a new adventure.

As I grew up I never thought much about life after death and if there really was one or not. I was busy living my life and thinking about my life here on earth. But then one day not many months ago a thought just popped into my head. What if we have to go to school when we die?
