Lexi: This is it. 🎉 A day we’ve all been waiting for—for years. And we know the three words that will make your hearts speed up and your eyes go green dreamy: Cat and Bones. Yes! We said it, Cat and Bones are back and we’re lucky enough to have their author with us today! Welcome, Jeaniene Frost!
Jeaniene: Hi, thanks so much for the warm welcome, and for having me on your site!
Lexi: Those two names, Cat and Bones, conjure up images of a fiery red-head and her enigmatic, Brit of a vampire…and all the trouble and predicaments they’ve found themselves in over the years. We know we’re not alone in rereading the entire series before getting our greedy hands on your newest Night Huntress release: The Other Half of the Grave. How did you feel when Bones finally started talking to you—giving his side of the story?
Jeaniene: It felt kinda magical, to be honest. Over two years ago, I was re-reading the beginning of Halfway to the Grave for some reason, and I was struck with the urge to rewrite chapter one from Bones’s point of view because all of a sudden, I could “see” it through his eyes. So, I did, and shared that chapter on my blog. Then, because I liked writing chapter one so much, I wrote the second chapter, and shared that, too. To sum up the next six weeks, Bones kept talking, and I kept writing and sharing chapters. I only stopped because I had another contracted book to write. Fast forward until summer 2021, when I re-read those previous chapters and thought, “Can I still hear Bones?” The answer was yes, so I finished the book, and apparently, he’s still not done talking to me because I’ll be writing the second book through Bones’s point of view, too.
Lexi: Bones is one of the most powerful characters we’ve ever read. Yes, he can fly and see in the dark, but we’re talking about his presence and ability to go head-to-head with Cat in a way that strengthens them both. Did writing The Other Half of the Grave make you want to dive back into the Night Huntress world again?
Jeaniene: It did! Even when I’d only written some of Bones’s pov, I was still mentally back in the Night Huntress world. That’s what led me to write the A GRAVE GIRLS’ GETAWAY last year, which is a novella showing what Cat, Bones, Denise, Katie, and the rest of the gang are up to, and how much supernatural trouble Cat and Denise can get into when they go away for a weekend.
Lexi: Well-crafted stories pull readers back to them over and over again and there is no better example of that then with the Night Huntress series. It will forever be close to our hearts and take us back in time, the sign of a powerful book. As you wrote this version, were there any parts that you’d forgotten and absolutely loved?
Jeaniene: Oh, yes. I had remembered Cat and Bones’ chemistry, of course, but I wasn’t sure if I’d feel it as strongly since this was a retelling. Boy, was I wrong! Bones was practically boiling with desire during so many scenes where previously I (and Cat) had only seen him playing it cool, and that was fun to discover. I’d also forgotten some of the banter between them, and how jealous Bones was, which was fun and also a little poignant to show from his side. I also loved finally getting to tell some things from Bones’ past that I’ve only hinted at before, like how Bones considered his virginity lost in stages of four, and other details about his pre-vampire days. Bones’ relationship with his vampire sire, Ian, got a little screen time, too. As series readers know, Bones and Ian have a complicated history, and Ian can be very manipulative. But Bones knows just how to play Ian, so watching Bones get Ian to do what he wanted while Ian thought he was in control was a lot of fun, too.
One of the things that surprised me was finding out how much Bones loathed Justina (Cat’s mother.) I’d only seen Justina through Cat’s eyes before, and Cat loved her mother so much that she forgave and forgot a lot. Bones didn’t, so he was mentally roasting Justina during several scenes, all while Cat (and previously I!) had had no idea what he was really thinking.
Lexi: I don’t think we could pick…we love everything Cat and Bones!! 😍 Thank you so much for bringing us more Bones and stopping by to chat with us! Seriously, we can’t stop grinning about this book!! Cheers to The Other Half of the Grave!
Jeaniene: Thanks again for having me! It’s been so much fun chatting with you.
