Today I read a blog post about an author who was speaking about the new breed of authors, the ‘super authors’ complete with the cape who churn out a book a month, all the while blogging, tweeting, facebooking, doing virtual tours, editing, responding to fan mail, perhaps even handling their own design and advertising. 

Sadly, I can’t count myself among this select group. I do blog, though not as often as I should. I don’t tweet. I do spend too much time on Facebook. I don’t even think about tackling cover design or designing marketing materials because I’m not willing to invest the time to learn how to use Photoshop competently. I don’t even format my own books. Sad, but true.

Using the right words & phrases

While some authors write poetry, others write realism. How do you know when the word you’ve written is the right one?

“You have a nice ass,” might be edited by a proofreader or beta to: “You have a nice butt.”

If my character is hardcore… scratch that. Characters don’t have to be hardcore to use the word ass. That’s how men speak. (Not to stereotype all men as there are always the exceptions). I don’t usually put a filter on my mouth unless I’m in the workplace, church, or with my family. And even then, it depends on which side of the family.

It’s my belief that traditions are what makes the holidays special. Here are the top five traditions that we have in our home. 

5.) Baking. The baking starts early… the first week in December. In years past when the kids were younger, the moms in the family would all gather at one house with two or three receipts and all the ingredients to create our holiday treats. The kids played and decorated cookies, the women laughed, cooked…drank a little wine. Although we don’t get together as often now, I do make my cookies and candy from scratch and share it throughout the season.
