Lexi: Oh how we love the Night Huntress world and it’s many, many varied characters. So, it’s no surprise that we’re excited enough to pop some champagne to celebrate this author interview today. Welcome, Jeaniene Frost!
Thank you so much for having me!
Oh my gosh, I can’t narrow it down to just one! For instance, I love when Veritas’ other nature takes control, and everyone else is terrified, but Ian just says, “Do you need a moment alone with yourself so the two of you can sort this out?” Or, when Veritas is trying to convince Ian to leave her alone because he could get killed again, and he laughs and says “I know. Danger, mayhem, and vicious demons await” because the man truly has no fear.
Then, of course, when Ian says to Veritas “Do anything you want to me. I promise to love all of it.” That is SO Ian. I’ve written some sexually-adventurous characters before *cough, Bones, cough* but no one’s like Ian. Veritas could literally say, “You know what would turn me on? Lighting you on fire before boinking your brains out” and Ian would be all, “Well, who doesn’t love a good barbeque? I’ll get the matches!” (Note: that doesn’t happen in WICKED BITE, but with Ian, I'm just saying that it could’ve 😊)
Lexi: Another reason to love the Night Rebel series is Veritas. I mean, she has balls of steel, she up and left Ian! Of course she had good reason to, she has some souls to catch. But still, she left Ian…talk about confusion! And confusion is exactly what Veritas has, confusion over who she is and who she wants to be. Her loss of self is so well written and real, how did you channel that?
Due to her dual nature, Veritas often feels out of control in our own skin, but on a lesser scale, haven’t we all? (puberty, anyone?) Also, many of us have had experience either with the death of a loved one, or a relationship ending, or a career taking an unexpectedly bad turn. Veritas is dealing with all the above, all at the same time. So, even though she and the book are paranormal, the struggle of doing your best while you’re hurt, confused, and you have little control over your circumstances is something a lot of us have been through. And, like many of us, Veritas doesn’t deal with it perfectly. She makes mistakes, and then she has to deal with the consequences of those mistakes on top of everything else. But, she keeps trying to be that better version of herself, even though she knows she’s not there yet. That’s also a struggle a lot of us can relate to, isn’t it?
Lexi: Finding yourself can be a hard journey, as some other characters in the Night Huntress world know very well. And in WICKED BITE we get to see some familiar faces. Which appearance was your favorite to write?
I’ll admit that the prologue, where Vlad walks in on Leila while she’s examining Ian’s crotch to see if he still has a demon brand, made me giggle out loud at my keyboard. But my favorite guest appearance was probably Cat from the Night Huntress series. Cat has a unique understanding of what Veritas is going through with her dual nature, but Cat also has all the tact of a rampaging bull. So, when Cat talks to Veritas about it, things almost go very wrong. Isn’t that Cat in a nutshell? Trying to do the right thing, and making a complete mess of it instead?
Lexi: We want alllll of these characters to be your favorite to write so that you’ll keep going, and going, and going! Thank you so much for stopping by the blog, Jeaniene! You keep us coming back for more and the end of this book definitely leaves us ready for book three. Cheers to the release of WICKED BITE!
Once again, thank you so much for having me, and I hope you (and readers!) will stick around to see what’s next for Ian and Veritas in WICKED ALL NIGHT, the third Night Rebel novel.
