Twice As Good…Or Bad

Writers are often told to write what they know.  I write paranormals and contemporary romantic suspense.  In one series, my Para-Ops team parachutes into North Korea from a spy plane—obviously not anything I’ve personally done.  In my Special Investigations Group series with HQN, I write about a blind heroine, serial killers, and the emotional and romantic difficulties that cops struggle with—again, these are all things I researched in order to create authentic characters and scenarios, but I can’t really “know” what it’s like to be blind, or tormented by a serial killer or one’s career.  (Actually, come to think of it, I might know a little about that last part.  But that’s another story…)

Thank you for letting me visit again, Crystal!  I’m so excited to be here!  PHANTOM SHADOWS, the third book in my Immortal Guardians series, is now available!  Woohoo!  I thought I would help readers get to know Bastien, the hero, through a character interview. 

In case you’re new to my Immortal Guardians, I’ll just take a moment to explain that the vampires and immortals in my series are both infected with a rare symbiotic virus that produces the increased speed, strength, and regenerative properties, as well as the photosensitivity and need for blood, that both possess.  Vampires are humans who have been infected with the virus.  They suffer brain damage that causes them to rapidly descend into madness.  Immortals are gifted ones, men and women born with advanced DNA, who have been infected with the virus.  Their advanced DNA protects them from the madness and bestows upon them special abilities that help them as they hunt the maddened vampires who prey upon humans.

Blending Science Fiction and Paranormal Romance

I like to try things I’ve never tried before. Whether it’s eating alligator or ziplining over Madrid, Spain, I’m all for it…at least once. How else will I know if I like something if I don’t try it? 

When I first started writing Waking Up Immortal, I didn’t intend to introduce the science fiction aspect. That came when Kier, the hero, came on board. I knew right away he couldn’t be an ordinary character, not when the heroine is an immortal. I had to make him special and another paranormal character just wouldn’t do. That’s when it occurred to me that I’d never tried my hand at writing a half-man/half-machine before. And I got excited. It was something new, and I wanted to try it.

Wait a minute, hold on there; yeah you with the smudge dazed eyes and the crippled fingers.  Yes you the one who has dreamed of becoming a writer.  You who spent years crying out against the tyrannical society that allowed people with a calling for medicine to make a living at it, or folks who dream of taking a spaceship to the moon to go.  Reach for the stars, there is nothing you can’t do; your dreams will make you a success.   They get to do what they want when they grow up, they are not considered flakey and lackadaisical they are considered true professionals.  In some instances for let’s say Doctors, Lawyers and Computer Wizards their careers define them in the community as well.
