Another FREE Digital Book! “Wolf Signs” by Vivian Arend

Win a copy of A Wolf Signs by Vivian Arend!
Wolf Signs
Robyn Maxwell doesn’t care that her brother has to cancel out on their backcountry ski trip. She can do it alone. The fact she’s deaf doesn’t make her survival skills any weaker. The chance to get away from it all and relax in the Yukon wilderness is just what she’s been craving.
Meeting wilderness guide Keil at the cabin starts cravings of another kind. Keil’s one hot hunk of ripped, tasty male. Now she has to deal with raging hormones as well as strange questions about wolves and mates and challenges to the death.
Keil was trying for a nice reflective retreat before challenging for the Alpha position of his Alaskan pack. He wasn’t planning on meeting the woman destined to be his mate, or finding out she’s not aware she has the genes of a wolf.
Between dealing with his accident-prone younger brother, a deaf mate with an attitude and an impending duel to the death, his week—and his bed—is suddenly full.
Far from the relaxing getaway any of them had in mind...

Feature Friday

So in the spirit of the upcoming holiday we are going to feature Halloween today and I am going to give away two books! I think Halloween should be a month long celebration and not just one day. So check back often, you never know when you’ll find some more Halloween themed goodies, woohoo!

So here is a little history on the origins of Halloween:
As you know Halloween is a holiday celebrated on October 31. Though Halloween is thought to have several different origins (All Saints’ Day, The Festival of the Dead, ect. ) it is most closely linked to the Celtic/Gaelic festival of Samhain.

Samhain is a festival held on October 31 – November 1. It is an Irish name derived from the Old Irish that means “summer’s end.” Samhain marks the end of the harvest, the end of the "lighter half" of the year and beginning of the "darker half". They believed that the veil between this world and the next became thin on Samhain; because some animals and plants were dying. Villagers would make large bonfires and people and their livestock would walk between two bonfires as a cleansing ritual, and the bones of slaughtered livestock were cast into its flames.
The wearing of costumes was an attempt to placate the evil spirits and to also disguise themselves and avoid harm. In Scotland young men with masked, veiled or blackened faces, dressed in white, impersonating the dead.
Which is where dressing up comes from. Though today’s imagery is usually derived from classic novels, horror movies and fictional characters instead of trying to placate or scare off evil spirits!
Samhain was also the time to stock up on food and slaughter livestock for the coming winter. Turnips, which were hollowed-out and carved with faces to make lanterns, were used to ward off harmful spirits.  Guisers, men in disguise, were prevalent in 16th century in the Scottish countryside. Children would go door-to-door "guising" in costumes and masks carrying turnip lanterns, offering entertainment of various sorts (tricks) in return for food or coins (treats).
Or otherwise known as “Trick-or-Treating”. Today children go in costume from house to house, asking for treats such as candy or sometimes money, with the question, "Trick or treat?" The word "trick" refers to a "threat" to perform mischief on the homeowners or their property if no treat is given.

So you can see where I a lot of our Halloween traditions came from right there!

How did the making of jack-o’-lanterns come about?
Well, it was adapted from the Samhain tradition of carving turnips. Pumpkins are used in North America because they are so plentiful here, much larger and therefore easier to carve and also associated with harvest time.
Where did we get the colors black and orange?
The colors are associated with Halloween because of the darkness of night and the color of bonfires, autumn leaves, and jack-o'-lanterns.

The word Halloween is a name that first came about in the 16th century because of a Scottish shortening of the fuller All-Hallows-Even.

Check back next Friday for more Halloween Fun Facts!!!

Book Club Book For November!

Our next meeting will be on November 7th (Sunday) at 7:00pm at Amanda's house. The book we will be reading and discussing is Enchantment by Orson Scott Card.

Enchantment by Orson Scott Card
The moment young Ivan stumbled upon a clearing in the dense Carpathian forest, his life was forever changed. Atop a pedestal encircled by fallen leaves, the beautiful princess Katerina lay as still as death—while a malevolent presence stirred in the hidden depths below.
Now, years later, Ivan is compelled to return. He finds the clearing just as he left it. This time he does not run . . .

Wow, sounds great and it has awesome reviews. I know I am looking forward to reading this one!

Word Filled Wednesday

WELCOME!

We had our second book club meeting Friday (10/8) at B’s house. Weeeee! Tons of fun if you missed it! Miss Brandi decked everything out for Halloween, getting into the spirit. We had skull and cross bones wine glasses, food picks, napkins, plates and even Halloween themed wine bottle charms!
Lot’s of yummy food: bacon-wrapped scallops & steak, pizza cheese & bread and little BBQ weenies.
And can’t forget the yummy peach wine! It’s okay, you can start drooling, we won’t hold it against you.

The Book:
Alexandra Sokoloff

Homicide detective Adam Garrett is already a rising star in the Boston police department when he and his cynical partner, Carl Landauer, catch a horrifying case that could make their careers: the ritualistic murder of a wealthy college girl that appears to have satanic elements.
The partners make a quick arrest when all evidence points to another student, a troubled musician in a Goth band who was either dating or stalking the murdered girl. But Garrett's case is turned upside down when beautiful, mysterious Tanith Cabarrus, a practicing witch from nearby Salem, walks into the homicide bureau and insists that the real perpetrator is still at large. Tanith claims to have had psychic visions that the killer has ritually sacrificed other teenagers in his attempts to summon a powerful, ancient demon.
All Garrett's beliefs about the nature of reality will be tested as he is forced to team up with a woman he is fiercely attracted to but cannot trust, in a race to uncover a psychotic killer before he strikes again.

I like to refer to this book as a supernatural C.S.I., although I’ve never watched C.S.I. LoL. This is what I assume it is like. =)

Like it says in the summary above it is about an Irish dark & sexy detective, Adam Garrett, who is called to a murder scene with his partner, Carl Landaver, who personifies your typical police officers. Or what you imagine one would be like.
The decapitated body that is found in a landfill, sans one hand and sporting ritualistic carvings, is that of Erin Carmody, daughter of a Boston bigwig.
It seems like an easy open and shut case when they go to question & arrest boyfriend Jason Moncrief who is thought to be a satanic follower and practicing the black arts. With girlfriend, Assistant D.A. Carolyn Davenport, and L.T. Malloy pushing for it, why shouldn’t it be? This can be an easy ride to the top for Detective Garrett.
But something just doesn’t feel right...
Then enters darkly attractive Tanith Cabarrus, a witch who claims to have dreams of the murders and states that Jason is innocent. Tanith believes that a demon is responsible and that they must stop him before Halloween. Or Samhain, when the veil between the living and the dead is at it’s thinnest.
So what is Garrett to believe? Is something supernatural going on or is it just some human psychotic killer? Is he “Willing to take a leap of faith. Willing to do things by a different book.” ?

This is a suspense thriller with lots of mystery and horror with a small dash of romance that is easily understandable and believable, even with all the police jargon. Even though I will admit to skimming over those parts. Detective kinds of things just aren’t my preference. As I stated before, I’m not a C.S.I., Law and Order or any of those type of shows, girl. But this book did keep my interest with the supernatural aspects and it was pretty creepy because you think; there are people out there like this and maybe this could happen. AG! *As you run to hide under your bed!* Brandi even had a nightmare about this book one night after staying up too late reading it!
Good world building but I was kind of up and down on the characters, relating wise. I did enjoy the book though and I did finish it. And it has fantastic reviews by others. If you are into the murder mystery thing I would def. recommend it.  For me, I would give it three. It was a nice read but I wouldn’t re-read it and I probably won’t pick up any more of her books.

Rating: 3 Wine Glasses

Smexy Scale: 3 Flaming Hearts - Hot

But that’s just my opinion. Did you read it? What did you think? Let us know!

Brandi: I am not very good at giving book reviews. But I will tell you that once I got to the middle of this book it was hard for me to put down. I have only read one other book by Alexandra Solokoff and that was The Price. The Price was equally as intriguing as this book. I am a big fan of murder suspense and mystery and this book has all of that and more.
