Okay, me Highland lovers. Last one for the day! Hope everyone has enjoyed the first day of Highlander Week! Stick around, there's more to come tomorrow!
Only her love could gentle his savage soul—
He was born to a clan of warriors of supernatural strength, but Gavrael McIllioch abandoned his name and his Highland castle, determined to escape the dark fate of his ancestors. Hiding his identity from the relentless rival clan that hunted him, he called himself Grimm to protect the people he cared for, vowing never to acknowledge his love for ravishing Jillian St. Clair. Yet even from afar he watched over her, and when her father sent an urgent summons, "Come for Jillian," he raced to her side—into a competition to win her hand in marriage.
Why had he run from her so many years before? And why return now to see her offered as a prize in her father's manipulative game? Furious, Jillian vowed never to wed. But Grimm was the man she loved, the one who urged her to marry another. He tried to pretend indifference as she tempted him, but he could not deny the fierce desires that compelled him to abduct her from the altar. She was the only woman who could tame the beast that raged within him—even as deadly enemies plotted to destroy them both....
Mad for Plaid? KMM Delivers the Goods (5 stars)
Hunted by the McKane, Gavrael McIllioch gave up his clan, his identity when he was barely a young man. Cursed to be one of the Berserker he fled the madness of his father and took the name Grimm Roderick. Living like a savage in the wilds it was only the sweet Jillian St. Clair who could lure the beast from the forest. Her protector for years he denied his love, ignored her desire to be his to save her from his mother's fate.
When Jillian's father brings Grimm and two other would-be suitors to fight for her hand it's a potentially deadly mix. There can be no other mate for Grimm and Jillian won't take another in his stead without being forced to it by her father.
Let me tell ya dear readers, I did not expect to like the hero and heroine of this tale. Upon first impression Grimm seemed a little too brooding, a little too self-absorbed and Jillian had a touch of stubborness and naivety that I was sure was going to make me want to smack her. Instead, the two managed to be much more than they had initially seemed. I was pleased that Jillian would rather be a nun than marry just anyone. She knew whom she loved and would marry no one else. As a reader who finds the whole "MINE!" mentality of the Aplpha male a bit too possessive and unlikable Grimm managed to be just Alpha enough to please other readers without being so overbearing I hated him for it. As a couple their chemistry jumped off the page, that classic girlhood crush blossoming into womanly passion with ease.
While To Tame a Highland Warrior is very much a romance it stands on a solid story. Jillian's father has Grimm and two other potential suitors come to work their magic on her while he and her mother are away. Unlike other potential husbands who have wound up to be so enchanted by Jillian she holds all the cards, Grimm, Ramsay and Quinn are immune to her charms. Even so, Grimm rebuffs Jillian's interest in him while Quinn and Ramsay both do everything in their power to be her chosen. Grimm's past, the father and clan he has left behind play into the latter half of the story in what for me felt like a second book of its own. Some readers might find that a little bit annoying. It works well though, ensuring the hero and heroine reach their happy ending without a bunch of unresolved questions for the reader.
Overall this was a richly enjoyable taste of Highland romance but I think it would please many paranormal fans as well due to the whole Berserker storyline. Ultimately it was the hero and heroine that I fell for. I will definitely be reading more from this series in the future. If you're a sucker for a well balanced heroine and the Alpha male that loves her pick it up!

ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway! Karen Marie Moning is one of the few Romance writers I still read. I don't think she'll be writing more Romances in this line, though, so I've been trying to space out her Highlander novels. If I win, I'll pick one of the two I have yet to read. =)
