Character Interview: Jax De Luca
From The Vigilante’s Lover by Annie Winters and Tony West
Q: So what do you do for a living, Jax?
A: If I told you, I have to kill you. (Laughs.) No, really.
Q: Is there anything you can tell me about your job?
A: That it comes with unlimited access to information about you. (Leans forward.) So tell me about this boy you’re seeing on the side.
Q: (Coughs nervously.) Forget the job. How did you meet Mia?
A: I tied her up and commenced interrogating her about her involvement in the disappearance of my comrade.
Q: And…how did she take that exactly?
A: Like a good Vigilante should. With trickery, training, and false information.
Q: So you were impressed by her?
A: Enough that I thought she was in the program. I had no idea she was a civilian.
Q: But you eventually figured that out.
A: Yes.
Q: What was the clue?
A: I’d tell you but—
Q: You’d have to kill me. I get it. All right. Safer topic. What is your favorite way to kill people?
A: This is a safer topic?
Q: Sometimes it’s good to know how you’re going to die.
A: (Laughs.) I don’t kill anyone I don’t have to.
Q: You know, maybe we do need a new topic. Where did you get that rockin’ suit?
A: I have a designer in Mexico, Armond Santiago. His work is unparalleled.
Q: Does he do women’s designs as well?
A: Yes, we created an entire wardrobe for Mia. I was particular about the lingerie.
Q: I bet. Must be nice, having your own personal stylist.
A: You should consider one yourself.
Q: (Looks down at fraying sweater.) Only if I had access to unlimited funds.
A: Right. I forget. Do you have any more questions? Six alarms have sounded since we’ve been sitting here.
Q: Really? (Looks around.) Are we in danger?
A: Only if you detain me any longer with your questions.
Q: Yes, well. Okay. Thank you for your — Jax? (Stands up, flummoxed.) Where did he go?
