First, thank you to Crystal for inviting me to blog here.
There’s always been something so alluring about historical romances. When I first began reading romances at the age of 12 (yes, my mother knew. I read hers. Lol) they were mostly historicals.
It got to the point where that’s the genre I preferred. And for years that was all I read. I’ve always loved being transported to another era where society could – and did – dictate what a person could and couldn’t do.
But it was also the clothes and the period itself. I read anything from ancient up until the early 1900s. And enjoyed them all.
Medieval, however, became my love. Not that I don’t enjoy Regency or Victorian. There’s so many out there and I adore the heck out of them. But for me, it was always Medieval.
So it was no stretch of the mind when I began to write my books were all set in the medieval time. I loved the swords, the castles, the gowns, and…well, everything. I did set several books in England, but it wasn’t long before I found another love.
Scotland.
I’ve always been drawn to that land and the rugged Highlanders who make it their home. When I first thought up my Dark Sword series, there was no doubt in my mind it was going to be set in Scotland, and my heroes Highlanders. What better way to have a hero then men who are known for their bravery, manliness, and stubbornness?
Since I also love to incorporate paranormal aspects in my books, I wanted my heroes to be immortal. And my heroines to hold magic as Druids.
Scotland has long said to hold magic. Myths and legends of all kinds have sprung from the land where Druids once walked. Some places are a perfect lure for magic and historical settings.
For me, that is Scotland.
My love is still historical romance, and most likely always will be. I’ve expanded some, however. I read a lot of contemporary paranormal as well. But when I’m at the bookstore and I’m looking at all the books, I’m drawn first and foremost to the glorious historical novels.
I’ll be giving away the third book in my Dark Sword series, WICKED HIGHLANDER, to a commenter who answers this question:
Why do you love historical romance, and who are some of your favorite authors?

ReplyDeleteI just wrote a comment, but it didn’t post so I will try again….
ReplyDeleteI love Historical Romances because I like feeling as though I’ve been transported to a different time, with different expectations, and a different meaning of honor. I just enjoy reading about the different ups and downs in different time periods, and the romances that went with them. Historicals tend to have that man protect woman philosophy and I’m a sucker for it. Authors I love are Karen Marie Moning, her highlanders series was hot! I also Love Lisa Kleypas, i pretty much enjoy all her books.
Thanks for the giveaway, and I am loving Highlander week! Donna, I love your book covers, those are some pretty hot highlanders!

Historical romance wouldn't be my first love per se but the first romances I read were historicals. I was always fascinated by how social and cultural norms have changed from previous times. When I lived in Europe for a while one of the things that I finally realized captivated me was that as an American our history is so short where as places I visited there had been there for centuries.
ReplyDeleteAll that to say I enjoy historical romance frequently for the history itself and romance/love is a theme that somehow seems simpler when you take all of the modern distractions out of it. I prefer them with a dash of paranormal though. ;) What can I say? That dash of fantasy has always been my first love.
Great post Donna! Thanks for adding on to this awesome week of Highland love. :)
I haven`t really read any historical romances yet. But I would really like to.
ReplyDeleteTherefor I don`t have any favourites.
But please count me in for the giveaway. Since I`ve been wanting to read historical romances :)

Hi Donna!
ReplyDeletea hero then men who are known for their bravery, manliness, and stubbornness?
Love that line! lol stubbornness-so true
I love Historical Romance for the main reason that I love the idea of imagining a different time and place. I like contemporary romances, but they're too "real" for my taste-I want something that is in no way real.
We all know I'm a fan :D but I also love Monica McCarty and Alyssa Day.
I think one of the main thing I enjoy are seeing how things worked back then. As an avid gardener I loved Gregory's book on the royal gardeners. I was totally fascinated at how much effort was put into getting new plants and having fresh flowers and fruits in the royal palaces all year round.

Historical romances are an educational experience for me. They appeal to me due to their unusual social customs and sense of propriety. They've often angered me due to the gender-related double standards which existed in the past, but despite arousing strong anti-male sentiment at times, I've always managed to warm towards the male leads in these romances. Mary Balogh, Lisa Kleypas, Christina Dodd, Julia Quinn and Johanna Lindsey are just some of the authors whose historicals I've read and loved in the past.

I'll read any romance but I generally stick with PNR. For my historical romances I usually go for regency or highlander books with swords and castles. Kresley Cole MacCarrick Brothers series was my first Highlander read.

Takes me back to a time when men were really men that looked like men because they were buff like men and that fought like men and that were romantic like men and that wooed like men and that were passionate like men and that seduced like men and that were a woman's protector like men and that were lairds of "my" petite castle ....woo woo hubba hubba :-)
ReplyDeleteHannah Howell, Karen Marie Moning, Donna Grant, Mary Ellen Gronau, Heather Grothaus, Jackie Ivie, Monica McCarty,
