New York Times bestselling author Jill Shalvis returns to Sunrise Cove with a powerful, moving story about a young woman on a quest to find the truth about her father who learns the meaning of true love along the way.

Alone in the world, Tae Holmes and her mother April pretty much raised each other, but as Tae starts asking questions about the father she's never met, April, for the first time in her life, goes silent. To make matters worse, Tae is dangerously close to broke and just manages to avoid financial meltdown when she lands a shiny new contract with an adventure company for athletes with disabilities and wounded warriors.

Her first big fundraiser event falls flat, but what starts out as a terrible, horrible, no-good night turns into something else entirely when Tae finds herself face-to-face with Riggs Copeland. She hasn't seen the former Marine since their brief fling in high school, and while still intensely drawn to him, she likes her past burned and buried, thank you very much. Hence their friendship pact.

But when April oddly refuses to help Tae track down her father, it's Riggs who unexpectedly comes to her aid. On a hunt to unlock the past, the two of them find themselves on a wild ride and learn a shocking truth, while also reluctantly bonding in a way neither had seen coming. Now Tae must decide whether she's going to choose love ... or walk away from her own happiness.

Excerpt

Riggs followed Tae outside, where they stood in a sort of stunned silence under the overhang. The military had trained him how to process adrenaline quickly and efficiently, but he was worried about Tae. She stood in that dress, a little dirty, bleeding, rocking her glam look in much the same way she’d once rocked her moody all black wardrobe, looking dangerous and gorgeous. Or gorgeously dangerous.
A warrior princess.
He pulled off his jacket and wrapped it around her shoulders as sheets of rain poured down from an angry, turbulent sky.
“Perfect,” she muttered in a tone that gave away nothing of what the hell she’d been thinking when she’d stepped in front of a loaded shotgun. He could still feel his heart skipping beats over that stunt. So much for processing the adrenaline.
“Well, okay then,” she said suddenly. “Gotta go.”
He had to hustle to grab her hand and hold onto her. “Where are you going?”
“Home.”
“You don’t have a car here.”
“I’ve got two feet, don’t I?”
He looked down at the high heels that were going to fuel his fantasies for a long time to come. “You can’t walk home in those.”
“The last guy who told me what I can’t do is still walking funny.”
That gave him a smile. He was a sick, sick man, but damn, he loved her sass. “I’ll drive you.”
Looking unimpressed, she raised an eyebrow.
“Right,” he said, reminding himself he wasn’t a soldier anumore, but supposedly a civilized civilian. “I’ll rephrase. Can I please give you a ride home?”
This got him a long side-eye, as if she was assessing him for … God knew what. “Sure,” she finally said. “Thanks.”
Note to self: use ‘please’ more often.
