FINDING MY WAY by Heidi McLaughlin (Guest Post/#Giveaway)

Heidi McLaughlin is joining us today with a little insight on her new release, FINDING MY WAY. Enjoy!

Liam’s parents are real. They belong to my high school friend and they’re the most disgusting people I’ve ever met. They did not attend his graduation and they hated his girlfriend. So much to the point where his father had her father fired from his job. Very classy, right? My friend’s mother was in the hospital when her grandson was born and she refused to visit or even acknowledge her grandson. To make matters worse, she was her grandson’s first grade school teacher. My friend has no relationship with his parents, he’s very successful, but never left the neighborhood he grew up in. I think he stays to spite his parents with his success.

Josie is not my friend’s girl, but a girl I knew from school who was so hell bent on her boyfriend becoming an NFL’er (he did) that she couldn’t see straight. She was from the wrong side of town, poor and he was her ticket out. Sadly, the boyfriend went on to college and the NFL and married an actor’s sister and lives in Texas now.

Liam is half real. The musician side is totally real. I have a few friends in a band. I’ve been backstage, in the green room and on the tour bus. I have emails of tour crap and the stories that Liam tells are all things I’ve seen. The football side is made up.

Harrison’s situation with Quinn is 100% fact. My friend, who is in a band, had his drink roofied and he was raped. He does not have custody of his son through. It’s a very sad situation.

Jimmy knocking up a chick after a one-night stand and marrying her, all real. They’re happily married and raising their son now.

Sam is real. I know her, can’t stand her. And she’s the Yoko Ono that broke up my friend’s band.

As far as the pressure that Liam was under from his parents, it’s very real. My daughter plays a high level of basketball and I’ve seen parents interact with their kids. I know parents who make their kids practice outside in the elements until its perfect. The pressure exists to achieve the highest level and often times parents forget that they’re just kids.

Liam vs Nick – this is probably a little bit of me. My “Liam” got away and I married “Nick”

The Beaumont Series doesn’t take place anywhere. The reason for this is because I wanted you to feel like you know Liam and Josie. I want you to feel as if they’re your neighbors. “Beaumont” came about in a few ways. 1) When I started Forever My Girl, Yvie and my friend Holly kept telling me how hot Liam was hence Beau and I live in VerMONT. 2) In one of our towns there’s a road called Beaumont and about 100 yards from the road sign is a climbable water tower.

Speaking of climbing water towers – we did this when we were stupid teens. They used to build them lower to the ground so they were accessible. They’ve since stopped doing that.

And finally, Grandma Betty. There aren’t enough words to describe the love I feel for my grandma. She was the one constant in my life. The one who taught me to love musicals, movies, books, tv shows. She’s the one who took me to see the Rockette’s even when I was a mother of two. It didn’t matter what I did, in her eyes I was going to succeed. We spoke emailed every day, even when she lived in places like Russia and Egypt, until cancer took over. Once she wasn’t able to be at computer, we talked and often times we talked about the weather because honestly, how much can happen in a twenty-four period. In the last conversation I had with her, I asked her how I was supposed to go on without my best friend and all she could say is that she’d be there.

I always knew from the day I introduced Betty that she’d be the person my grandmother was. My grandma was big into dream chasing and encouraged everyone to find their own path.

Finding My Way is dedicated to my grandmother.
