The Trials and Tribulations of Being an Author Mom
As I’m writing this post, my eleven-month-old daughter sleeps snuggled into my bed just a few feet away. Yes, I’m an author mom, and watch out, I’m extremely sleep deprived!
Little did I know when I started writing soon after my first child was born that I was about to embark on a wild adventure, spanning five years (and counting), and resulting in more than half a dozen books. Now here I am, five years wiser, and I’ve discovered a few all-important truths:
1. Writing is hard. Seriously y’all, it’s really hard. I’ve got a million stories floating in my head, and picking just one to focus on is difficult enough. But then actually putting it on paper? Ack!
2. Writing is even harder when you have a tiny human being clinging to you. Okay, this one is obvious. I’m always amazed when I hear stories of moms writing books while their little ones are napping. Because that’s what I do. And it’s nearly freakin’ impossible. Somehow they sense just when you’re getting into the flow of a scene and pick that moment to wake up.
3. Just when you get accustomed to a routine, it changes. After six months of intermittent napping, my daughter started sleeping through the night. Suddenly I found myself with several hours of writing time after she went to bed. Nirvana! After months of only getting a few minutes here and there, my productivity level skyrocketed…and then she started teething, and sleep became nonexistent again. Sigh.
4. The most important truth of all: It’s worth every moment. Every time I start to feel the stress, my daughter gives me one of her toothless smiles. She lifts her arms up to me. Calls me ‘mama’. My heart melting, I remember what I’m doing all this for. Because I love writing, yes. Because I can’t live without it. But also because I can’t live without her. She, and her brother, they are my everything.
In honor of this upcoming Mother’s Day, I dedicate this post to all you moms out there. May your hard work be rewarded with love, joy, and laughter.

So what was a classical geek armed with a lot of useless knowledge to do? Become a lawyer, of course!
After attending law school in Florida, she practiced real estate law for several years before finally admitting to herself that negotiating contracts wasn't nearly as fun as dreaming up stories. She never imagined all the mythology she'd learned throughout her undergraduate education might actually come in handy, but it makes perfect fodder for the paranormal romance stories she now dreams up.
