Reading and Wine, a guest post by author Julia London (#Giveaway)

Today we have the multi-book author Julia London here to talk about book clubs. What better place to talk about book clubs than here at Reading Between the Wines! Cheers!

I enjoyed reading the 'about' section of your blog and oddly enough, I came into my very own book club very much the same way!
Statistically speaking more women read than men (I actually mention that in THE BRIDESMAID) and more women drink wine than men, so it’s no coincidence that women would bond over great books and wine.

A few years back I was pleasantly surprised when a local group of women asked if I’d be willing to come and talk with them after they chose one of my books for their monthly selection. I was even more pleasantly surprised to find the nicest group of intelligent, (I mean, they did choose my book, after all…LOL) kind, funny women and to top things off they had WINE.

I was so envious of their camaraderie and lively chatter and enthusiasm for words on a page. I knew I had that with other authors I knew, but those are mostly online relationships.  To be sitting among “friends” and sharing the love was a whole new experience.  So at the end of the evening, I asked them if I could join them.  I was fully prepared for that awkward moment of silence when the group frantically tries to think of something to say…but it was a resounding and instant yes!  I think it’s been about 10 years now, and thanks to them, I have read some really great books I might not have otherwise picked up.

We have bonded over books, certainly, but the bonds extend so much deeper. We support one another through moves, job losses and searches, divorces, and sadly, the death of loved ones. We are each other’s support group.

I’d like to ask your readers if they belong to a book club, how they found their way into them and do they also drink wine? Do they have book-themed meals? What are some of the best books they have read that they might not have otherwise picked up, had it not been for the book club?
