October's Wine Club #Review: Wicked Beat by Olivia Cunning

October Wine Club

The Perfect Pairing:

Lexi: How to pick...how to pick? The Sinners are one rock group I would pay good money to go see in concert. If only they were a real band. *sigh* But they sure are real when you pick up one of Olivia Cunning’s books! So lets get down to it girls. Who is your favorite Sinner now that we have finally gotten Eric’s story?

Crystal: Ya' know, even though I don't really care for how Brian's character has developed since his book, Backstage Pass, Brian 'Master' Sinclair is still my favorite Sinner. I'm going with his 'original' character from that book, one of my first book boyfriends ;-) , and NOT on how he acted in Double Time. They don't call him "Master" for nothing and I do love me some magic fingers! Bwahaha!

Crystal L: My favorite Sinner is Trey Mills. And calling him a sinner is very apropos, isn't it? *winks* In reading order his book, Double Time, comes after Eric's, but was technically released before Eric's. And I have to say, after reading Eric's story I love Trey even more!

Lexi: I did remember Eric, hard not to remember them all, but he did always fade into the background when Jayce or Sed were around. His quiet ways and sense of humor really come out in Wicked Beat, and I loved that. Cute too that he felt so insecure. Did Eric work for you, blue hair and all?

Crystal: I really loved how Eric's character came to the forefront in Wicked Beat. In previous books he was kind of pushed into the background as the goof and the 'watcher'. But here we really got to see all of the many layers of his character. Yes, he has a great sense of humor but he also incredibly sweet, thoughtful, loyal to a fault, insanely talented and creative, and pretty dang inventive in certain settings too. *wink* And until you get to peeling all of those layers back you really have no clue how insecure he is under his class clown facade.

Crystal L: Cunning did an amazing job with Eric in this book. I can't imagine it's easy to turn the previous wallflower into the main event. Eric's corny jokes and humor blended perfectly into his vulnerabilities in this story.

Lexi: Ok, there are two main characters here. Rebekah is the lucky woman to be added to the Sinner’s significant other’s list. I felt that Olivia wrote her pretty well, I connected with her right away because of her history with cancer. But her own humor and determination to bed a Sinner kept me going. She was pretty ballsey in some situations, what did you think?

Crystal: I loved Rebekah's strength above anything. The trials in life she had moved passed and her backbone in current circumstances were all admirable. I was a little put off at first by her infatuation with Trey and how she treated Eric because of that but as the story progressed that irritation lessened and by the end, I couldn't think of anyone else that would be better for this band's brilliant drummer.

Crystal L: I agree with Crystal, I was kind of put off with her determination to get Trey in the beginning. As a character though, she really came around for me when she started to realize how great Eric was. I would say that Eric is perfect for her, but I feel it's more of the other way around. Reb is a perfect fit for Eric. The fact that they both had issues (albeit very different issues) that the other could stand by them and love them regardless really cemented them as a couple for me.

Lexi: In the beginning I wasn’t sure about what part Trey would play between Eric and Rebekah. Turns out a nice...appetizer to the filling course. I loved how he kept working at Eric, pushing his buttons and knowing exactly what to do and say to connect Eric and Rebekah. I vote they needed Trey, you?

Crystal: I wasn't quit sure what Trey was up to at the beginning! But I think Rebekah and Eric would have gotten there eventually on their own, but what fun would that be? Trey always adds that extra spice into any situation and in this case it was some blazing hot spice!

Crystal L: They definitely needed Trey. On their own, they're both kind of awkward, almost shy characters with big insecurities. With an outsider to push them in the right direction, they were kind of lovingly forced to acknowledge their attraction and feelings for each other.

Lexi: Another hot read from Olivia Cunning. And now I see we will get a Sinners At The Altar sometime soon! You with me? More sinners?

Crystal: Yes! I have been waiting for the novella Appetite for Seduction for years and am so excited that we will not only be getting that, but novella's for each couple now! This is one series that I will NEVER get enough of!

Crystal L: I'm going to be kind of devastated when this series ends. I love the Sinners so effin' much. I don't think anyone can write lovable kinky guys the way Olivia Cunning does. Definitely looking forward to Sinners At The Alter though! Nothing better than getting that peek at Happily Ever After!

  1. This series is phenomenal. I love every single character, though I have a serious soft spot for Trey. I read them in numbered order, instead of release order. I think what was really fun was watching Olivia Cunning's style develop. The last few books had way more to offer from the characters' backgrounds and dipped into some deeper emotions and issues. Good stuff. And sexy as hell. These will forever be in my re-read stash.

  2. I agree, her style has grown. Fun to see in an author. Trey...yeah, easy to crush on him ;)
