Love on a Midsummer Night by Christy English (Interview/Giveaway)

How to Tame a Willful Wife (Shakespeare in Love, #1)Love on a Midsummer Night (Shakespeare in Love, #2)Much Ado About Jack (Shakespeare in Love, #3)

Lexi: Shakespeare lovers, this ones for you. Love on a Midsummer Night...sound like A Midsummer Night’s Dream? Read on to find out, we have Christy English in the house!

Christy: Lexi, thank you so much for hosting me! I am thrilled to be here, talking about some of my favorite things: Shakespeare, acting, and romance. ☺

Lexi: Oh how I love renditions of Shakespeare plays, especially when they are moulded into historical romances! When you were acting, what Shakespeare play was your favorite to perform?

Christy: I loved playing Juliet…though that was MANY years ago. The whole dying at the end part was pretty depressing, but the poetry of that language, the lyricism of those words of love stayed with me years later. I have always been in love with love, even when it ends badly. One more reason to write romances…we always get to have a happy ending.

Lexi: Do you feel that acting has given you a new view on writing? That you have an inside view to share with readers?

Christy: For me, acting and writing come from the same place. Both forms of art start with character: who is that person, how does she live, what does she want, what does she do to get it? Of course, with writing, I have to expand that POV to include other characters than just the protagonist. But the questions I ask them remain the same: who are you? What do you want? How are you going to try to get it?

Lexi: Love on a Midsummer Night sounds like a wonderful historical romance, perfect for summer (a time when I really love to pick up those HR’s). But I have to say, I am even more excited for Much Ado About Jack. Check out that cover!!! Yowzer! How excited were you the first time you saw it?

Christy: I jumped up from my chair and danced. I swear. How silly is that? But “Jack” on that cover just reaches out for the reader as if she is Angelique. I thought to myself…how perfect is that? And then I thought, OMG He’s HOT!

Lexi: From what I can find, it appears that after the third release of the Shakespeare in Love series you are done? Do you have more plans to bring us romanticized Shakespeare?

Christy: I want to keep telling romances using a bit of a Shakespearean theme…I want to tell Anne story, Anthony’s sister from HOW TO TAME A WILLFUL WIFE. In that book, she played a very minor role and really seemed down for the count. I don’t think she’s defeated. I think she has a wonderful story to tell, and a happy ending to go with it.

And after visiting with Titania in LOVE ON A MIDSUMMER NIGHT, I just have to see how that wild actress settles down…or what ‘settling down’ would look like for her. What kind of man could stand toe to toe with that lady? Is he man enough to let her keep acting? Would he try to woo her like any other lady? Would she let him? All stories start with questions for me.

Lexi: I have a feeling your well of inspiration has just begun to be tested, and I can’t wait! Thanks for stopping by the blog Christy! Now...off to find Love on a Midsummer Night.

A Regency-era retelling of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream."
The charming, dissolute Raymond, Earl of Pembroke, is the most notorious rake in London. Home from the war against Bonaparte's forces, he spends his life gaming, drinking and bedding courtesans, trying to forget the only woman he ever loved.
Arabella, Duchess of Hawthorne, is the woman who betrayed him. Forced into a marriage with an old man against her will ten years before, Arabella never saw Pembroke again. But now her elderly husband is dead, and the new Duke of Hawthorne wants to force her into his bed.
Desperate, Arabella goes to Pembroke in the dark of night and begs for his help and protection. In spite of his anger and bitterness, Pembroke can not turn his old love away. He and Arabella journey to Derbyshire during the midsummer festival to escape the marauding duke. Arabella and Pembroke find that their attraction for each other has not diminished, but has grown to a conflagration beyond their control. They find themselves falling under an enchantment, caught in a dream from which they never want to wake.

  9. Hi Christy!

I loved finding out on your website that acting in Shakespeare’s plays and that you had based How to Tame a Willful Wife on Taming of the Shrew!

That's my favorite play by Shakespeare and I try to emulate her wisdom as often as I can (just ask my husband!).

Which character written by Shakespeare do you think you are the most like?

  22. I absolutely adored Caroline and Tony's story in How to Tame a WillFul Wife and watching them 'tame' each other. I'm also a big Shakespeare fan and have read most of his plays. I do enjoy his comedies more so than his tragedies and am so looking forward to your retelling of "A Midsummer Night's Dream."
