Love Letter, Interrupted – by Tracey Devlyn

Paris, France
Summer of 1804

Dearest Guy,

Parisian society grows more tedious by the day, making my mission here all but impossible. Now that Napoleon has declared himself Emperor, the atmosphere is charged with uncertainty and there’s a heightened sense of wariness amongst my targets. But the Chief has sent me the name of the man suspected of destroying the six British ships. From what I have gleaned so far of the Frenchman’s nature, he is ruthless enough to accomplish such a feat.

I find myself both excited about and terrified of this additional mission. Valère is touted to be handsome, charming, and extremely intelligent. If he is responsible for the lives lost on those ships, he operates on a level I have yet to climb.

Oh, Guy. How I wish you were here. I miss our training sessions and long discussions about weaponry. Three years have crept by without a single teasing wink from you. How many times have I walked down the street and imagined seeing your black locks and broad shoulders weaving through a crowd? Too, too many.

My regret is nearly as strong as my loneliness. You’ll never know how much I grieve the loss of your kiss on that fateful night at Mrs. Lancaster’s masquerade. If only I’d had enough courage to lean forward, to press my lips against yours, I could have at least brought that small piece of you with me to France. But no, I chose to flee like a stupid, stupid girl—

A knock sounded at the drawing room door. Cora’s heart leaped and she slid the missive beneath the ink blotter. Lady Kavanagh poked her grey head around the door. “Excuse me, Cora,” her aunt said, “your gentleman friend has arrived.”

Valère. Cora closed her eyes for the briefest of seconds before meeting her aunt’s concerned gaze. “Give me a minute, if you will.”

Her aunt hesitated a moment before nodding and closing the door.

Cora lifted the blotter to retrieve her unfinished missive. She smoothed her fingers over Guy’s name, ignoring the clench of longing in the back of her throat. Then she set corner over the sputtering flame of a candle and followed the fire’s advance down the sheet of paper, burning away every damning word. Standing, she tossed the fiery square onto a silver salver.

With a heavy heart, Cora straightened her shoulders and cleared her mind of the future she could never have. Cleared all expression from her face until the Raven stood in her place.  She turned toward the door, toward her destiny...

  1. This sounds good, I like a historical romance that takes place outside of ballrooms. A female spy will be interesting.
