Wouldn’t it be great to be an all-powerful deity?
People would worship at your feet. They’d throw gold and jewels and nubile young guys or girls at you. You could do whatever you wanted and no one could tell you no.
Sounds great, right?
I was a huge mythology geek in high school. I took Latin for four years. I had a great teacher, Miss Rurode (who still teaches), who also chaperoned trips to Europe for the students. I went to Italy three times and Greece once, all with Miss Rurode. Those trips were amazing. Sure, some of my friends went because they could drink legally for 10 days but I went for the history and the scenery.
The Roman Forum. The Coliseum. Pompeii. The Parthenon. I had the most amazing time walking through museums filled with ancient artifacts.
Fast forward twenty years and I’ve got this idea: I want to write a paranormal romance series with a unique mythology. But what pantheon? The Greeks and Romans have been done.
Then I hit on the Etruscans. They’re also from Italy but predate the Romans. In fact, the Romans incorporated much of the Etruscan mythology into their own. But what happens to the old gods and goddesses when the new ones come along?
In WHAT A GODDESS WANTS, Tessa, formerly known as Thesan, Goddess of the Dawn, has become pretty much obsolete. When the Romans rose to power, their gods usurped most of the Etruscan deities’ powers and that bitch Aurora sidelined Tessa from guiding the sun across the sky. Tessa still has duties as a goddess of childbirth, however, and, when called on by someone of Etruscan heritage, she will give as much help as she can.
Lucy, aka Lusna, Goddess of the Moon, became the patron goddess of the Etruscan lucani (werewolves) when she granted an ancient king his wish that his people have the strength to fight off all invaders. Today, she continues to take care of the lucani, but her power is dwindling in HOW TO WORSHIP A GODDESS.
In the upcoming GODDESS IN THE MIDDLE (releasing in July), Amity, Goddess of Health, uses her remaining powers as a medical aesthetician, helping cancer patients and burn victims heal and feel better about their altered appearance.
These goddesses all managed to find a niche in the new world but they fear they’re becoming more obsolete every day. They barely have enough power to save themselves from Charun, god of the underworld, who wants to siphon off their power. They need heroes to help them beat back the darkness.
In mythology, there’s almost always a love story…which almost always ended tragically. But since I’m the one writing the stories now, I get to decide the ending. And happily ever after is no longer out of the question.
